Turtle Dove Reef
Eighty kilometres off the West Australian coastline and within sight of the continental shelf lies the mysterious Turtle Dove Reef. The previously unsurfed Turtle Dove fell onto the Storm Surfers radar screen when they were filming their latest 3D installment. Long time fishermen in the area spoke of a vast open ocean wave that only broke during the largest of swells. Should they trust the fishermen's story...?
The Storm Surfers team decided to roll the dice and carted all their equipment west across the continent. As the swell struck they motored out by boat and plane with eager eyes and crossed fingers. What they found was a fast-moving wave that almost killed Tom Carroll, it also provided a perfect bookend to the film which starts and finishes at Turtle Dove.
On top of that the fishos took the crew to one of their favourite waves - a perfect left that broke for hundreds of metres in the middle of nowhere. How could they have ever doubted them?
