PSC Single Fin Classic
Peninsula Surfriders Club held their annual Single Fin Classic to round out the contest season with perfect offshore 2-3ft sunny conditions at first car park, Gunnamatta on Saturday 23rd of May 2009.
The three divisions, Juniors, Open and Over 45 ran in 20 minute heats with contest director Liam McCafferty at the helm and Hollywood commentator Geoff Vockler entertaining the crowd.
This classic club event started slowly - in true seventies style - with the groms taking the surf first on the old school wave weapons as whales passed by.
Junior division made light work of the pre-80s craft manoveuring the boards with more speed and freedom then their elders due to their quick reflexes and sub-50kg weight. Grant Williams shredded above the rest taking top spot, Mike Antonie second and Liam Fowler claiming third place and longest ride award.
Ol'masters division spent most of the day reminiscing about 'back in the day' and how much better the banks were, fewer crowds, and comparing scars and so on. Ronnie 'Gonga' Gorringe blew minds on the original Trigger Brothers board going top to bottom on a set wave to the beach,. However, President Gavin Duffy pipped him at the post with two solid scores, leaving Rod Drake in third and the best tube award from round one's cover up.
Open division was hotly contested with the day's stand out Liam Jolly positively destroying the 3ft rights on his backhand every wave on the "White Shadow." Liam took the title with Mark "Texas" Walker dislocating his knee – again - into second place and local legend Gary "GT" Taylor in third position.
The day ended at the respectable hour of 4pm, and the crew all helped pack up and headed back to the clubhouse for a BBQ, refreshments, a slash on the half-pipe, and an hilarious presentation reflecting on the days good vibes.
The 2008/09 season presentation night is being held on Saturday 25th of July at the "Gunnamatta" room at the Mornington Racing Club, it's sure to be an epic night, details available at www.psc.org.au. // ROBBIE WARDEN
