Places of the Mind
Victoria: 'Places of the Mind' Kidman called it in an old Surfers Journal essay and I knew what he was talking about. It's the sort of coast that turns people inwards, causes them to reflect, especially for a surfer visiting from the east coast. Sydney and the Gold Coast - so loud and bright. Perhaps it's the warmer weather, abundance of people, or rapid, short interval swells...who knows?
But Victoria - the land of Leunig - seems more inward and thoughtful. Oh, I'm sure when Winki is firing these words will seem ridiculous, but that aside, it's a very different coast from elsewhere, especially during the colder months. And these photos, taken by Kristian Sartori, are Victoria typefied, the image that I see in my minds eye when I think of that coast.
