The first day of the Pipe Masters hummed along just swimmingly - coupla barrels here, coupla barrels there - as Pipe and Backdoor put on their friendly faces. Any drama came from the qualification shuffle as surfers fought for the last few places on next year's tour.

Oh, there was one moment of high drama, and that came when Kieren Perrow got bounced off the bottom, dislocated his shoulder and had to be rescued. KP forfeited the heat and his chance of requalifying next year. Injured and shuffled out of the deck, KP copped it from both ends. He now bids adieu to his competitive career and hello to the official title of Commissioner of the ASP.
