More Bounce to the Ounce
It's not just the Australian coast where rockwalls and groynes are a regular feature. In America, like here, they've been integral to the development of many coastal towns. Deep, stable bars allow the fishos safe access to the ocean so their industry can prosper.
But, of course, it's the other side of the walls that gets surfers excited, where the unexpected side-effects provide a playground of waves. Stable banks, deep gutters and an uncanny attraction for swell are characteristics found at most rockwalls, but it's the ones that are favourably aligned that get the best side-effect - rebound wedges.
And Newport Beach California has one of the best breakwalls going. Whenever the swell is out of the south Wedge is a tonne of fun. Wait for the wave to rebound off the wall, watch it double in size and then spring into action. Best of all, it's one place where bodysurfers sit on par with lids and standups.
