The Mid Coast In Full Flight
It's all about perspective. Despite the alluring waves about its rural coasts, South Australian surfers - specifically those living close to Adelaide - have to contend with a high percentage of water time along the Mid and South Coasts of the Fleurieu Peninsula. The South Coast, although blessed with an abundance of swell, suffers from a lack of high quality and/or reliable breaks. The Mid Coast on the other hand has a surprising number of quality reef breaks along its sixteen kilometre stretch, but it suffers from a lack of swell due to its position tucked inside the shelter of Gulf St Vincent. Quality surf days are far and few between in the gulf; most surfs consist of short period windswell, or the small refracted outer bands of long period groundswell that you just know is producing epic waves elsewhere in the state. Last week's incredible Southern Ocean swell finally brought all of the elements together along the Mid Coast. Winds were light all day thanks to a ridge of high pressure, and the swell muscled up to a consistent 3-4ft with the afternoon tide, lighting up just about every spot between Sellicks and Sullies. Local shaping legend and surf documentarian Rodney 'Weasel' Bedford captured these fantastic images from one of the best swells of the last decade. In fact, to put things in perspective - despite Swellnet founder Ben Matson and Swellnet forecaster Craig Brokensha being native Adelaidians, we're pretty sure this is the first published Swellnet Sessions from the Mid Coast in ten years. That's how good it was! //BEN MATSON
