Maldives - September Report
Words and photos by Louis Harris of Liquid Destination.
I can't believe our season is pretty much over. It feels like only yesterday I was setting out in February about to kickstart another year of chasing waves in the Maldives.
September/October was a bit of a mixed bag in the Maldives. We had some pumping days but also had some average ones thrown in the mix with small swell and strong winds.
This time of year is historically erratic from what I have seen with the conditions. Some years, such as 2008, September pumps, while other years we seem to battle with small swells and strong winds. I don't think you can pick it as there are bigger patterns at play than we understand and have experienced. I talk to the locals about their weather patterns as they have strong connections due to their seafaring nature and I think they are even baffled by it sometimes. So where does that leave someone like us trying to predict things?
Reflecting back on 2014 I have one word to describe this years waves in the Maldives and it would be consistent. I don't think we had enough big swells to have made it something special but as far as our clients were concerned I think it was a perfect year for the business. It could not have been much better in that regard as everyone got their chance.
One other important aspect to our business is the clients we look after and I think that trumped the waves this year. We saw so many return guests or friends of friends and it made for a cracker of year in that regard. I could never thank people enough but I hope we show it in our commitment to finding empty waves and showing people a good time around this amazing country. //LOUIS HARRIS
