Leroy Bellet
Take a look at the photos in the gallery here. Good surf photos, yes? Well, sit back and listen as they have a backstory that'll make you appreciate them just that bit more.
They're all taken by Leroy Bellet, a south coast lad who first sent a photo to Swellnet in March 2013. It was a pin sharp shot of a pitching left. A water shot, tightly cropped. And the wave, such as it was, was damn near perfect but also verged upon unridable - we subsequently ran it as Wave of the Day.
Fast forward twelve months and after running many of Leroy's photos we featured a short story of his on the site. The story included the line: “I wondered whether the decision to ditch school was a good one.” School? We realised ol' Leroy was young, his Facebook photos betray as much, but just how young is he?
“I'm fifteen.” Fifteen! This is next level precocious. And how long has he been shooting for?
"I've been shooting for one-and-a-half years." And there's your preternatural talent. "I started straight in the water, nothing else about photography really interests me." Which explains his portfolio being almost exclusively water shots. You can imagine Russell Ord giving an agreeable nod right about now.
Leroy lives near Bawley Point which gives him access to the East Coast's most concentrated stretch of reef breaks and the pilots who ride them. So who are his favourite surfers to shoot?
"Scott 'Whip' Dennis, because of his ability to stand up straight in sketchy and hopeless situations. And also Russell Bierke, because he isn't scared to paddle mutants."
Russell himself is of similar age to Leroy and you can sense the talent and opportunity available to both with carry them far.
Check out Leroy's Facebook page and like it to enjoy the future work of this young fella.
