The Flying Wedge
The flying wedge is an attack formation invented by the Romans to breach an enemies frontline. The Roman legions would arrange in a V-shaped wedge and then rush the enemy, often scattering them in the process.
The surfing equivalent is found near well-angled groynes and rockshelves, where the sidewash bounce meets the incoming swell and causes the wave to double in size and thickness. If timed right the sidewash can be used as a slingshot entry into the wave. And just like the Roman version surfing wedges scatter the front line of an incoming swell into countless angles for maximum fun.
During a recent swell photographer Alex Turoy travelled south of his local to shoot a few flying wedges for your viewing pleasure.// STUART NETTLE
