Ellis Ericson picks up Good Vibrations
It was an inauspicious way to start the day of the Good Vibrations Retro Single Fin comp - hungover. He was gonna ditch competing yet when Ellis Ericson got to the beach at Canggu he found himself in Heat 8 of the First Round. So, said Ellis, "I just got out there....I just kept powering and the heats just started turning over you know?"
It was the second running of the Good Vibrations Retro Classic, a friendly competition in which surfers have to ride classic single fin retro surfboards and no legropes are allowed. It was well attended by locals, pros, and elder statesman, some, like Terry Fitgerald and Mitchell Rae, shaped the boards being ridden.
"There were so many good boards out there," said Ellis afterward, "the Blue Bird, the Hot Buttered, the Flex Tail, and seeing Terry and Mitchell here, who are my favorite shapers including my father....having those guys here and surfing in a heat with Terry, I was so inspired! It's the stuff I just thrive on."
Ellis won the six man Final with Jay Button second, Marlon Gerber third, Tipi Jabrik fourth, Chris "Cutch" McHutchison in fifth, and Rob Machado in sixth. Each of the finalists received a custom made classic style Luke Studer single fin surfboard.
