Cloudbreak
We knew it was coming from a week out. The size of the swell was never an issue. The only question hanging over yesterday's Cloudbreak session was the local winds: would the trades blow hard, or would they stay light? You can never be completely sure in the tropics.
Many crew made the trip over irrespective of the conditions: Paul Morgan, Karl Attkins, Hippo, Russell Bierke, Josh Ku, and even Rasta pulled a surprise appearance. Notably absent were many of the Hawaiian and mainland US big wave surfers.
As it transpired, conditions fell short of the benchmark set by the 2012 Volcom Fiji Pro but were pumping by any other comparison: 12 - 15 foot with intermittent trades scarring the outside ledge, but gaping caves running through the inside. "One of the scariest sessions I've had," said Josh Ku.
Opening shot is Rasta on a beast, followed by Paul Morgan inside a couple, both were considered standouts of the session. Russel Bierke on the yellow board, Hippo on the red, Karl Attkins grabbing rail and applying the brakes. Jason Polakow is the nut with the sail.
This session will be a late inclusion into Tim Bonython's ASMF. Grab your tickets here.
