Chasing frames on the Almost Coast
Victor Harbor has to be one of the more frustrating regions to live as a surfer.
Open to a fair slather of Southern Ocean energy, it's as consistent as anywhere else in the country - but that's where the generic compliments end. The South Coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula is one of those areas where the elements frequently fall short of producing something noteworthy - the wind's just off axis, the tide's too full, the swell's too big (or too small), or the banks are non-existant. The great arvo session mentioned on the sly at the pub that night is usually nowhere to be seen by the next morning. And all of this without mentioning the active sea life.
So I suppose the big pay-off is for those rare occasions when the planets do eventually align - because, it's gotta happen sometime. And when the waves are good down south, they're really bloody good, if you've got the patience to wait and wait and wait. Nicholas Warhurst managed to be in the right place at the right time as a recent Spring swell graced the coast.. here's some lovely frames from the Almost Coast for your Friday afternoon viewing pleasure. //BEN MATSON
