Cape Solander - Home and Away
It may have been the Maroubra fellas that broke it to the mainstream but it was Cronulla surfers that were the first to ride Cape Solander. Ray Ryan, Steve Cohen and Steve Haig first surfed Solander - or as it was originally known, Pikers Hole - in the mid-60's. They surfed it for four or five years, joined by a few bodyboarders, among them Cronulla legend, Steve Doney.
Later on, in the 1980's, a group of Cronulla bodyboarders began surfing it and gave it the name Cape Fear (or Deniro's). They had it to themselves until the turn of the millenium when the Bra Boys discovered it...and, you know how the rest of the story goes.
These days whenever it breaks it's a drop in centre for touring pros and freesurfers alike. The following Session, shot during the last east swell by Ian McDonald, features solely Cronulla fellas. This afternoon I'll post a Session with the Cape Solander away team.
