Way back in ye olde days Gerry Lopez said of riding Pipeline, "It's a cakewalk when you know how" and people nodded their heads deferring to Lopez' sage-like presence all the while wondering what the fuck a cakewalk was. It's thirty years later and we still don't know.

Anyhoo, the way Lopez once dominated Pipe is how Mark Mathews now dominates Cape Solander - deftly and with feline grace. He makes it look too easy, as if we could all jump off the cliffs and ride it. In fact, if you thrust a microphone in front of him Mathews may even describe it as being like a cakewalk and we'd all nod our heads at his sage-like utterance.
