Sam Jones

Surfers may come in all kinds and constitutions but it takes elemental desire to chase waves big waves. It's a desire common to all heavy water surfers, and that seems the most natural path for Sam to take.

Out of town

Ain't nothing like a succesful out of town mission.

On Sunday, photographer Toby Manson and sidekick Sam Jones set the alarm early, scarfed a bowl of ceral and hit the highway before sunrise. Their window of opportunity was limited.

Step Right Up

Sam Jones is a young surfer from Sydney's Northern Beaches. 15-years young, to be exact. Sam has stepped up to the plate during a couple of swells this past winter, paddling out on the biggest days and spinning 'round on the set waves .

Here Sam steps up during a session just over a week ago. He drops in late, negotiates the step then arcs it off the bottom.

Unfortunately that's all the footage we've got so if you wanna know how the rest of the wave goes you'll need to use your imagination. Me, I'm calling a succesfully threaded pit through the inside.

Glorious Cape

Jeremy says that he'll be donating money "for every foot of wave I surf", which is one heck of a mission. If you'd like to help out Jeremy, check his Everyday Hero profile here.

Dead On Arrival

Last week's oversized East Coast Low left few options for surfers in Sydney and surrounding areas. Such was the size and period of the swell that rarely seen bommies were breaking well offshore mitigating wave energy before it came inshore. It was just too wild and raw for many of the usual breaks.

One of the places handling it was Deadmans on Sydney's Northern Beaches. Owing to the extremely deep water off Sydney Harbour and North Head the swell was hitting Deadies unaffected and with the full force of the low.

Ground Floor Up

Sydney photographer, Toby Manson, gives us a great perspective of waves breaking during the last east swell in Sydney. These photos are taken both north and south of the harbour. The last shot showing a nasty basement that you'd do well to avoid.
