On the weekend the largest swell of the year hit Australia's coastline lighting up reefbreaks from WA to Vicco. Yeah, the year was only five days old but a record is a record.
Mike Maxted shot a reefbreak in south-west WA during a classic summer day of waves.

The whole East Coast is currently sweating in anticipation for a tropical cyclone and the swell it may deliver, forecast to be 4 to 5 foot at best. Meanwhile, Mike Maxted in Western Australia nonchalantly informs me of an OK session that went down over his way. Just another one of those days in the West...

Been a bit of disparity in swell fortunes between West Oz and the rest of the country recently. Even more so than usual. As winter trundled into spring the swell engines slowed in QLD, NSW and much of Vicco, while the pistons kept powering over in WA. Been plenty of mid to large-size swells breaking under Grade A conditions, much like those seen in the photos below.

Chris 'Swiv' Jones and Mitch Taylor make gluttons of themself in a veritable barrel fest near Perth. These photos were trimmed down from a much larger selection; the fellas did indeed gorge themselves silly and almost every image was a pit.
So what's the accumulated barrel time in a session like this: One minute? Longer...?
And the cost for cramped hamstrings and a brimful of memories? Just one busted fin.

Nothing to do with riches in the arid north of WA. Perth surfers recently had a few beachbreak bowls to play amongst and yet the shortest day of the year was upon them. With light running low Luke Campbell and co rushed through the moves as the golden light waned.

Derek Hynd has his Friction Free Fun but over in the west Mike Maxted and Mitch Taylor have their own version of FFF - flash filled fun. An activity done, by the looks of it, on some friggen funky fins.
Mitch flies while Mike fires the flash.

OK, we can hear the grumblings from over here. For the last few weeks - hell, probably the last few months - West Oz has been getting pumped by swell yet what have you seen on Swellnet - not much since the big Drug Pro went down at Margies. So then, this is our meagre attempt to bring some parity to the party. Clean lines and slick moves in and around Perth with all photos taken by local snapper, Mike Maxted.
PS: That's Luke Campbell swingin' from the rafters.

Perth surfers, Luke Campbell and Marc Lee, along with photographer, Mike Maxted, scarf their carrot sticks, squint their eyes and head out into the night for an uncrowded hi-per session on the Perth beachies.

From a session last month...
Hippo, Mark Mathews, Richie Vass and Laurie Towner get stuck into a wave of unbelievable dimensions but unimaginative title. A wave with a name as blunt and literal as the rocks underneath.

Last Friday we ran a session, Punching above it's weight, that warned of the perils of dismissing the Perth beachies. Just when you call bullshit they'll swing a right, such as the one shown in those pictures, and knock you down a peg.
Turns out it wasn't a one hit wonder either. Here's some shots that Mike Maxted took, also from the Perth beachies, of a knockout left. A great combination from an overlooked stretch of coast.
