The Cape

Let me hear nothing about saturation coverage and over exposure when viewing these photos. It's Cape Solander, it's pumping, and you're sitting at your desk. What else are you gonna do?

Ox, Boogs, Lloydy and Brad Hampson get among it on Monday. You were probably sitting at your desk then too...

Cronulla Beaches

The Cronulla beaches are really one continuous beach that stretches five kilometres from Boat Harbour to North Cronulla. The beaches are often maligned by surfers though that may be more due to the abundance of quality reefs nearby than the way they break, a theory reinforced by the last two days of waves.

PS: Dig the kneelo bottom turn in shot 10!

Cape Solander

Sunday morning at Cape Solander saw the usual suspects - Sammy Mac, Spud Salazar, Caleb McLean, the odd Bra Boy - making hay between the Cape and Middles. While far from perfect these photos by Charlie Straumeitis show the occasional moment of grace between the frequent punishments that were metered out.

Cronulla all over

From Cape Solander to Windy Point, up to Shark Island and on to Elourea, Charlie Straumeitis did the 'nulla shuffle yesterday, checking plenty of waves but scoring nothing quite epic. Although it's worth noting that Charlie missed the early session at Solander where Jeremy Hrbac got this pit on video.

Cronulla

As Tropical Cyclone Sandra's forerunners made landfall Friday afternoon Charlie Straumeitis shot the action at Cronulla. It marked the beginning of a very good weekend of surf in Sydney.

Jack and Matt

Matt Griggs is a meditation practitioner, a clean living citizen in a short-back-and-sides kinda way.

Jack Irvin is a long-haired bohemian, an artist and musician he sprays his boards with Slayer insignia.

What they share is a fondness for knee deep reefs and a finely honed tube sense. They put this to use on Monday when the large weekend swell in Sydney dropped enough to allow entry into this unnamed wave near Cronulla.

The One Step Program

It ain't quite as harrowing as the Shippies Step but the proximity to dry rock gives the Solander Step its own fear factor. Blow it here and you're grating cheese.

Last Friday Perth Standlick spread his wings as he cleared the step then regathered and set his rail into a fun-sized barrel. At the same time photographer, Charlie Straumeitis, lost focus as Perth was in the pit ('Damn spectators') but regathered to capture Perth hitting the channel.

And that GoPro camera attached to Perth's front leg? "Came out rubbish," said the young bloke from Bondi. "Camera fogged up."

Cape Reverb

When the Cape breaks there's two things you can be assured of. One, there'll be an audience, half of them holding industrial-sized lenses, and two, said lenses will take many photos, swamping the 'net with images.

So if you've already seen enough action from last weeks Cape Solander sessions I apologise...

But anyway, here's yet more of the action, this time featuring Caleb McLean, Mouse, Perth, Jess Pollock, Ignacio Salazar and one or two fellas we don't recognise.

Mikey & Mooney

Mikey Brennan (green westuit) and Andrew Mooney (maroon westuit) have been towing together lately. Their latest go out being Cape Solander during last weeks east/north-east swell in Sydney. While hardly the ideal swell direction for the cape it made for some short, intense pits.

Recently Mikey left his Hobart home to settle in Bondi so expect to see more shots of the duo whenever it's pumping.

The Yesterday Show: South Coast

With nowhere near his home handling yesterday's storm swell Sydney Eastern Suburb's photographer, Charlie Straumeitis, pointed the chariot south for some reefbreak action. Although the size was a bit smaller than that hitting up the coast the trip wasn't completely in vain.
