Caity Simmers In 'Toasted' and Malia Manuel in 'Malia'
Caity Simmers In 'Toasted' and Malia Manuel in 'Malia'
Nike's 2011 film Leave a Message seemed like the seachange for women's surfing but history showed otherwise. Nike proved to be just another big player who dabbled in the surfing 'space' before bailing out on the idea and the reality of womens equality had to wait till later. In 2018, pay parity made women equal, at least on paper, though questions lingered in the broader culture.
But two recently released edits show we are very much there.
Championship Tour rookie Caitlin Simmers has released an edit called Toasted (cut and directed by Simmers herself) while ex-CT surfer Malia Manuel just dropped a fifteen-minute cut called Malia (shot and chopped by Morgan Maassen).
17-year old Caity's cut is bursting with teenage vitality: full of airs, a gritty grimy soundtrack, and a very Dane Reynolds-type vibe as far as surfing performance and style goes. Mexican points, French beachies, and local waves all get shredded by Caity and pals, which include fellow CT'er and Sunset winner Molly Picklum. While Simmers marked her CT card absent last year and Pickles didn't make the cut, the surfing standard shows both could be world champs, right now. Proper turns, full repertoires, both ways intuitive tuberiding, no weird over-coached stylistic tics - it's all there.
At last year's Final's Day, Steph cleaned the table of an old guard Top 5 at head-high Trestles (aided by Carissa having a shocker), yet after watching Toasted it's almost unimaginable that she could do the same against Caity or Pickles.
At 17, Simmers could have more than a decade at the top before we see the best of her, and the same applies to her peers. That’s a very expansive vista opening up, both for her and for women's surfing.
Though the CT career is now behind her, the expansive vista still exists for Kauian Malia Manuel. In her eponymous short we get the full art treatment from Maassen. To be frank the cut comes across as an outright homage and love letter to Manuel, full of brooding images of clouds, rain, silhouettes etc etc. It's sensual as all hell. Surfing is beyond a sport, according to Manuel, it's a dance with nature.
No-one could watch this gorgeous film and refute that. It's full to overflowing with a gentle, wholesome erotica, which is also a dance with nature. Unlike the raggedy, freckle faced urchin/punk aesthetic of Simmers, Manuel glides through the film as a fully-fledged Hawaiian Goddess.
If the slo-mo occasionally gets a little overdone, the surfing and variety of crafts and locations keeps the film balanced. My favourite image of the film was Manuel at home riding what looked like a substantial quad semi-gun, fully trimmed out on a solid Hanalei Bay wall being lip-groomed by tradewinds.
Seeing her post-CT (where she often struggled) on alternative equipment was something of a revelation. We knew she shredded from her early performances in Leave a Message but that somehow got lost in the yearly CT grind, which seemed to sap the creativity and joy from her surfing.
No danger of losing that here. Every shot, every wave is a joy to watch. The opening and closing sequences - Teahupoo perfection for the former, Indonesian tubes the latter - are pure fantasy stuff.
Is there a post-CT career path now opening up for Manuel as a globe-trotting freesurfer - a career option that has so far remained closed off to women? I'd hope so. I'd happily sit down and watch an edit like this every six months, or whatever she came up with. Female surfing at its highest level, on a variety of equipment, in perfect waves, presented as art, somehow feels very fresh; as innovative in its own way at the opposite end of the spectrum to Simmers presentation.
I'll happily watch Simmers' every heat now, for the punk turns and little stylistic flourishes that make her so fun to watch. The mini soul arches, look backs, and tube slouches in between shreds. The skate style which emphasises quiet hands instead of arm waving.
Simmers film, with girls surfing in amongst their male peers reflects a new reality, one I surf in every day. Girl shredders, completely unremarkable except for the surfing they do, mixing it up as both peers and equals in the lineups they grew up in.
We're not at the start of this journey, nor at the end - it still has a way to go before it diffuses through lineups worldwide - but it's now clear women's surfing is an unstoppable force. It's going to be very cool watching it evolve if these two films are any guide.

yep Malias film is beautifully done and agree totally with the write up.........well done to her
Caity ripping.
"no weird over-coached stylistic tics"
"The skate style which emphasises quiet hands instead of arm waving."
Coaches and some competitors take note. Mix it up like JJ - ease up on the albatross arms on every turn.
Reminded me of this:
Very good Dan. That was funny. Love there stuff.
I’m a lopsided surfer on a symetr.. ah.. even looking ish board so I can sort of relate.
some avians may differ in opinion.
PS. Check the flutes on the semi-gun
Great insightful words Steve.
These two videos show a maturity in both the surfers and production style that are amazing.
Punk & princess prowess.
A path unto the world unfolds to those whom "seize the day"
totally agree I see it at every beach!
Toasted is the best surf film Gary has seen for a while. Got Gary so amped to go out and shred in the surf to mix it up from the continual shredding in the gym.
Malia was beautifully shot but too much SloMo and not enough surfing for Gary, who likes things to be action packed
"Manuel glides through the film as a fully-fledged Hawaiian Goddess" You nailed it
with that description Stu. I used to like watching her CT interviews just to see her smile. The film is a pleasure to watch in every respect. Her surfing speaks for itself, a timeless style. Similarities to Steph I think.
some sponsors spoil surfers & some support
I watched the whole Malia vid and I rarely commit to that. Beautiful scenes, sure a little too much shlo-mo, but all very lush
The way Caity and Kerrsy hit the closeout coping in Toasted's Mex section might be showing the influence of high reps at Waco?
Toasted for me is the standout - started yawning in Malia, seen it all before.
loved Toasted, made me want to go surf, those waves looked so fun and relatable compared to a lot of other great edits or videos lately
can't wait to see how she goes in Peniche
Yeah great review there FR.
Really cool observations.
I posted at the end of last year when Caity qualified that this was the beginning of the Caity Simmers era, daylight second. Except, daylight isn't second, it's a bunch of frothing groms just as revved up and stylish as her.
And as for Malia, well she's quite simply the Queen. Of everything, i don't even care what, but on a wave, pure feminine beauty.
So good to see a couple of female profile vids. Been hoping Steph would put out a decent length one for some time now.
Are there no women writers who are worthy of regular inclusion in commentary on their peers on Swellnet, or is being the sausage factory truly the brand? SW loves to take the piss out of the WSL but they twigged to this basic requirement long ago. For now I’ve moved my subscription to the forecast-inferior competition, as it will remain while Steve is the most prominent SW voice on women’s surfing, just seems not only anachronistic but I wonder if perhaps deliberately so.
Hang on... so despite acknowledging that our core business is better than the competition, you've cancelled your Swellnet Pro subscription (Jan, 2022) and signed up with our competitor's "inferior forecast" website because we.... don't have women regularly contributing editorial pieces?
Go woke go broke!
Are you serious? A male, by no fault of his own, writes a positive article promoting the work of two different women surfers and to you this equates to SW being a “sausage factory”.
You won't be missed.
While there is historical merit to your observations, this is not it. This is definitely not it.
This reeks of ageism and sexism.
Swellnet should only allow a young female to write correspondence and movie reviews on anything female related or it's sexist.
Nup.
Barking up the wrong tree there...big time.
No-one can say that Steph was "lucky" to win her world titles, but I think she was lucky the tour was not half held in grinding left barrels.
I know, I will most probably get roasted for saying that, but Malia charges tubes both ways and Caity is truly insane and is difficult not to make comparison as a female Dane Reynolds.
These women including Carissa and up and coming girls are pushing the envelope at Pipe, Chopes and Indo. respect.
Ben, I'm toying with cancelling my Pro Subscription. Despite Swellnet being streets ahead of other forecasters, the fact that you didn't find a female to comment on sbsb's comments about Steve's editorial about Caity's edit... well, the least you could do is now get a female to comment on your comment about sbsb's comment about Steve's editorial about Caity's edit. Or not ; )
sbsb, I agree. I think it is outrageous that Swellnet even have an editorial about Caity's film in English. Out of respect for Caity and her locations’ locals, editorials should be female-perspective and in Spanish, Bahasa Indo, Portuguese and French. Here's one to get you started:

obviamente, isso é apenas uma boa diversão!
