Noa Deane Scores Invite To Shark Island Challenge

Alongside current world champion Tanner McDaniel, BB GOAT Mike Stewart, and local lords such as Andrew Lester and Jack Baker, Noa Deane has scored an invite to this year's Shark Island Challenge.

It's not wholly unsurprising, Noa rode a BB as a kid and since moving down the NSW South Coast and hooking up with the Drag crew he's rekindled his love affair with 42 inch boards.

Said Noa on Insta:

"Never thought when I was booging Froggies backwash as a grom on my chapel O+E boog I would end up in the Shark Island Challenge. This is actually bonkers, thank you for this opportunity."

The SIC has 24 surfers - including four locals - in a format that runs from First Round immediately into a Final, to squeeze the contest into one tide cycle: the Island is only surfable three hours, at best, either side of high.

The waiting period began last Saturday, the 24th May, and runs through to June 30th. The Island prefers a southeast swell: south swells running wide and east swells too square, though both the 2001 and 2016 comps ran in beastly east swells.

It's the first time the contest has run since 2017, when it was won by Jase Finlay. The inaugural contest, held in 1997, was won by Matt Percy, who now lives in WA's southwest shaping purebred guns for the local bommies.

Some very well threaded tubes especially by a stand up at SI this morn check 9:55 and 10:13.30 am on the replays. Are they expecting tomorrow to be better or just setting a high bar for it to run or not because it looks pretty contestable.

Start of the waiting period and a pretty small swell, though great conditions.

Reckon they'd be waiting for something heavier than what this morning served up.

For some reason I thought it was a short waiting period only till the 30th of May and didn't look like much between now and then; but yea makes sense

Yep, plenty of time. Also, not sure if they've factored this in, but we've just gone through a period of very slow swell activity. Lots of long period stuff that formed in the Southern Ocean, yet near zero from systems formed in the Tasman Sea - which is what the Island really needs.

This will change soon. They can afford to wait.

In these modern times of acceptance it's wonderful to see a surfer transition into and identify as a boogie boarder.
Will we see protests from natural born boogie boarder competitors who think noa has an unfair advantage?

A lot of standup surfers think they’re better than boogers , because they can stand up and boogers can’t, but Noah is disproving this theory, good to see.

Did a late bolt to **** yesterday and saw a few BBers walking back that sorta looked familiar. 'Twas Tanner McDaniel and Mike Stewart, obvs hanging during the SIC waiting period. I asked how big it was and they replied 'two to three feet'.

Thought to myself, 'I hope that's Hawaiian size cos it was bigger than that at home.'

Nup, it was tiny. Even three feet was generous. Ye olde maxim about driving away from good waves held true.
