Bali Cliff Collapse
Yesterday, a section of limestine cliff fronting Impossibles, on Bali's Bukit Peninsula, gave way. The collapse was due to development on the cliff face which weakened the limestone. At present, boulders are blocking beach access either way.
When finished, the development will feature 116 apartments, with prices starting at AUD $585,000 for a one bedder, lavishly descibed thus:
"Set in the white cliffs of Uluwatu, with incredible ocean views and onsite lifestyle amenities, Amali Luxury Residence brings new heights to serviced living."
The following photos and videos were provided by Julia, the first image taken before the collapse.

How depressing words cant describe the anger and sadness.
Shocking
$585,000 for a one bedder in Bali? There is a sucker born every minute.
Not too Bad with Bingin on your doorstep
Does it come with a free “surf guide “
p
Sad reality is, there are loads of hominid lifeforms where even losing that kind of money wouldnt even make them flinch. I'm puzzled as to wht they have dug so far into the cliff that there is no cliff. why would? how does that?
That mausoleum looking penitentiary next door is at least ON the cliff.
probably russian money....
Definitely a price drop with those units. book em on Air B&B. Would've been interesting to see how the trucks and excavators got into the pit,
I can remember back in the '90's after a long absence and being stunned and angered by the development on the cliffs at Ulu's, it was sacrilege to how it was years before. It's taken a long time before anything has happened, and luckily no one was killed, but will this be enough to stop the rampant cliff development.
No
... but me thinks u knew that and the question was rhetroical...
Sadly no
don't know how they got in but I can see at least two ways out
Ash, re the access. 4th image you can see the access ramp on the left of image at the front of the excavation. Be interesting if it was the ramp that collapsed.
I didn't look close enough as photo #2, clearly shows the ramp.
Dicey looking site with those sheer walls. Some serious amounts of concrete and rio rod will be needed to make sure it all stays in place.
Rhetorical question, yes. But also wishful thinking, nobody wants to see the place completely smothered in hotels. Anytime from now would be a good time to curb the cliffside developments.
I wondered that too. Given the trucks are on high rotation and you would think the collapse was while excavation works were taking place, probably pretty fortunate it was not worse.
just unreal, what a thing.. paradise gives up the ghost.
Crumbly $100mil cliff project? Fark me.
What a disaster.
How’s that 4th photo. Now that’s a site cut…
Safety first hey. Fuck me you wouldn't catch me anywhere near that.
Great work humans!
Two write ups in two days giving pause for thought re a Bali trip. Is this this Stu's way of slowly reducing the numbers so he can have a window of relatively uncrowded waves?
Ha...I think the Balinese idea of "relatively uncrowded" surpasses mine.
She cooked.......
I’m here…. There are no uncrowded waves! It’s ridiculous, anyone with a Mal takes the inside… whether they can stand up or not.
Also a point of reference, one of my friends’ daughters images was used in association with the development. She had nothing whatsoever to do with it. They bought the pic from an image site. She’s getting threats, but she has no involvement at all.
Saw that she made an Instagram clip explaining how they came to use her image and clarifying she has nothing to do with it.
Good on her, know that she or her dad would not be supportive of it.
what don't they realise about limestone? watch the next section go soon!
might be time to revise some of the recent 'development' right along the south coast...
https://www.google.com/search?client=ms-android-samsung-rev2&sca_esv=0eb...
the dude's with the excavator jackhammer attachment have been making some serious coin of late
pantai melasti and nearby really are quite impressive in some of the works that have been undertaken
from a scale of 'engineering' perspective... probably not so much from an environmental / safety perspective...
some of those cliff top beach clubs are next level too, pools and dj booths literally hanging off of a cliff edge
some nerves be wigging out today i imagine
and all in an earthquake zone!
I've always been nervous around those cliffs. Staying up there near the edge always gives me the creeps and walking below to get out to impossibles just freaks me out dodging between some of the huge boulders that have fallen in the past. One big earthquake will change the vibe. Hopefully not in our lifetime.
and this is why i've never been to that part of indo...
It used to be amazing! Just warungs and Micks Place at Bingin.
There was NOTHING at Bingin when I surfed it...just a muddy bush track in and empty 6ft perfection with myself and two friends.....haven't bother going back ever again after experiencing those days.
bingin is maxed out at 4foot........ but please keep telling us about how good Bali was back in the day
That generation often call literal face feet though.
https://www.theinertia.com/surf/the-confused-history-of-estimating-wave-...
Educate yourself mister know it all.....and btw how are the XXL waves measured???....yep!!!...by the face, crest to trough just like all waves are measured....oh yeah that's right when your balls drag on the ground and the cloud of delusion is all encompassing and all the king roosters are strutting checking the lineup everyone wants to be the MAN who calls it the smallest because their balls are bigger and their gloat the loudest...blah blah blah.....call 15ft Teahupoo 6ft because that's right a wave is measured from the back ffs grow a brain......within the pack of strutting roosters checking the lineup wave height will vary and be all over the place because ball size bravado is based on no definable parameters as is the packs opiniated no sensical variables as to how big viewed waves are....and when the most reliable, repeatable and consistently verifiable wave measuring tool is available to all ie - trough to crest! what will the delusional big balled rooster pack squawk while strutting their stuff???....dribble and BS and that's about it.
Settle down, Agitated.
I was defending you.
Oh....ok lostdogy np...rant was half tongue in cheek with basic facts thrown in for good measure though.
I've often wondered about that. I've heard chest-thumpers say they only measure waves from the back ?
Are they referring to when its a swell 100 miles out to sea? not sure.
What about 20 foot slabs.? That would mean that a 20 ft Teahpoo slab could be called 1 ft because its shaped like a cliff.
Not sure if I've heard correctly, thoough.
If I'm taller than 5ft and I can stand upright in a barrel then the wave is bigger than 4ft...but hey if one wants to call black white then reality speaks for itself.
It can be useful to have two scales of measurement one to measure the size of the swell before it rises as it feel the floor and a second to measure the wave face, I’m sure you realise that a swell can produce waves of various sizes at the same moment at neighbouring locations depending on bottom contouring, but I do get you point about the macho undercalling but by I’ve not had to listen to it for a long time thankfully.
FFS, the pace of development on the Bukit has gone way past out of control, it's time nature fought back.
Dude at the base of the fresh cliff face could at least put his hard hat on for the camera! First the surf guide story and now this! Just so sad to see what surfing has done to the place, though there's probably been some positives around town too for the locals but who can tell now what's for better or worse?
Its not just surfing that has ruined Bali, tourism in general. Westerners of all persuasions have destroyed what we came for. Multiply that by the lack of infrastructure to cope with the numbers and corruption and you get what we got. It happens everywhere we go ..eventually.

Lucky some of Sydney coast is sandstone
This ad digusts me. How to fuck up what once was a beaut surf spot with cliff side development
Couldn't agree more, grubs. It's vile.
"Luxury" - the most overused, misguided, fool's gold term of the modern day. Every bloody thing these days is sold under the banner of "luxury". As long as we're all revelling in luxury, everything will be perfect. Don't worry about the cost paid by the planet, the animals, the indigenous peoples, or anyone else who actually cares about anything other than themselves! Humans! Aren't we fantastic!
Everything except development is in slo-mo in the video. Was there in '76 on our honeymoon. It was beautiful & unspoiled then. Seeing vids and hearing others who have been there , I would not want to go back for a visit.
Well you won't find it hard to get served cheese there.
Tragic, as is the other article The Indonesian Push. Is there any 80s Bali left on the island? I haven't been there since 2005.
might be a remnant or two in Kerobokan?
RDRR
Where will the sewage go from those crappy apartments once built ?
the indian ocean sewerage works..........criminal what they are doing there......
The Bukit is becoming a manufactured contrived version of Santorini
Human centipedes snaking through the streets seeking the most Instagram able shareable moments
Except with no quiet season for Bali
Fuck!
Had 2 of my longest lefts at Impossibles... was such a great spot to get away from the crowds when a little bigger. Poor Bali. I gave up when i saw the huge hotel going up at Nusa Dua
Hati hati sebelum mati
Appalling what we humans can achieve when we see $$$ - in early 70s (if memory serves) there wasn't a single building (not even a warung) along that coastline from the Uluwatu temple to Jimbaran, with exception of a small temple on Balangan beach surrounded by white flowering, perfumed frangipani, and a couple of sail stores for jukungs above high tide mark. There were a few Balinese carrying boards and cool drinks for the few surfers making their way to Uluwatu. The first warung at Ulus must have been built around 1977 or 78 I guess? I slept in the cave at the S end of Balangan beach in May of '76, enjoying the solitude, with a couple of surfin buddies from QLD and NSW, and beautiful head-high barrels in front of 'wave rock' on high tide, until locals snuck in while we were surfing and ran off with our food. As noted, a major 'quake, like the Boxing day one of 2004, will create havoc there, and elsewhere ...
That 4th photo reminds me of this clip. Absolutely terrifying. That cliff at Ulus would have had no warning creaks and cracks though.
?si=nh531f9Pr2YeCwUWAs surfers I think we can all take a bow for what was once a paradise. Can't be helped, our travelling to Indo has always been our birth rite since MOTE & so I can't see how we can complain how Bali has evolved. Our involvement is megga as our culture has been totally embraced by all the "Claytons Surfers" that have been fitted out by the big conglomerates & so compounds the slicing of a very small pie. We're part of the sideshow for all that visit, so it's any wonder that development has gone gangbusters on the Bukit Peninsula. It's a double whammy visitors & surfers trying to be as close to the water as possible. Anyone that doesn't surf I'm certain hold a deep fascination for what we do & they'll pay whatever it takes!
Too true... surfers "find" the most beautiful places... then, inevitably, end up watching the destruction of those places... only hope G-land remains those 4 crappy camps... can just imagine development taking a foothold there... inevitably inevitably
It's not G-land we should be worried about, at least thats protected as a National Park. (for now).
It's the Mentawai's.
Infrastructure, has already begun. New Roads & a new airport. HT's is looking like a micro Canggu atm, the Indo government want to spread the love, share the spoils. Could this area of the Mentawai be the start of the new Bali - could be fucking curtains!
Only a Short Distance from G,Land to West Edge National Park Boundary
"Could this area of the Mentawai be the start of the new Bali - could be fucking curtains!"
it's what the authorities want!
if you travel indo a bit, and have a bit of local language, it doesn't matter where you go, there's always some 'bapak' spruiking it as 'the new bali" ...or wanting it to be so...
you cannot blame them, they don't surf!
and they also don't understand all that comes with "the new bali"
there's actually 10 places in indo that are planned to be the new bali, with the australian embassy having its dirty little hands in the mix
and guess what...
the mentawai's is one of em!
hence the new airport
there can be a lot of good that comes with such plans... but in a country where corruption is still so rife, there's a lot to question too...
there's a reason russian investment has slotted in so well, they do corruption well too!
and I dare say, many 'investors' are little rich kids from the oil and gas barons of russia
they know how to play the game...
and also, frighteningly, the new prez. loves to spruik his russian love credentials
Better call Bob the Builder
The ocean is patient. In the end it always wins. Always.
and they will just keep digging and re work the cliff face to make it work for the greedy developers and in 12 months or less the fuckin thing will be up and Trading and no one will ever say another word about it because $$$$ talks
I hope all of those resorts/villas/clubs fall into the ocean and take the filthy influencer cunts with them
Apologies to the Balinese people, this is for the influencers and developers and any other exploitative prick in Bali.

Haha. One of their best songs. Well done.
One good thing about going down in an Cataclysm would be watching all the show-ponies scrambling for their smart phones.
I'd be laughing like Satan I reckon.
Sadly its not that sudden. It's happening day to day around us. Not some biblical trumpet in the sky one sunny afternoon.
BTW, that transcript, is it from a song?, or is it yours? like a modern Mark Twain.
Yes, it’s from the 1996 song Aenema by Tool written about L.A.
Thanks, I'll look it up. Should be in the Gospels! (lol)
Actually , instead of Mark Twain, I was thinking reverse 'Desiderata".
none of that warm fuzzy stuff,
its 2021, and its pure fury. gimme more mama!
Taylor Swift?
I’d be a tad worried if I was the adjacent dwelling shown at the top of the cutting in that 4th pic.
Environmental vandalism at its finest.
Hey mredhill,
Here's another classic example of a 'finest' environmental vandalism you'll find right here on our shores. These rocks must hold some spiritual significance for the local Garigal ancestors. Did they get permission to do this from any Aboriginal authority?
The two big rocks at Palmy have suffered severe and deliberate scouring by hacking into and disfiguring the face of these iconic rocks. I wonder what Midget would have thought! What does the Northern Beaches Council have to say about this?
Senseless and insensitive, why did they choose that place to install Midgets statue, why there? Away from the central area too. Quite minor compared to the development above but..yes..human's ill-founded decisions and actions are getting worse and worse.

What's the place next door called? It's not Anantara is it?
yep, right there.
Is Mu on the other side?
How rampant 25 years is a quarter century.
It's a crazy one to watch.
Cliffs have rights!
Does this mean engineers instigated the collapse on purpose, or it was an unforeseen consequence?
I've wondered if a little rumble would shake those villas off the cliffs at Bingin.
They have a 5+ earthquake at least once a year and 6+ every 15 years or so. If those cliffs collapse under the weight of an excavator they're going to have to do massive works to make the site stable.
The inevitable collision between an excess of money and an absence of class.
Perfect.
So I finally convince the wife to stay on a cliff top place for a few days and its the Anantara right next door. Not for a couple of months though. I better not show her this article
Same. I'm there (Anantara) and Suarga in August. Hoping the cliff holds.
why not pitch a tent at the bottom of the cliff there and have a nice beach camping holiday instead?
That's what I would consider environmental vandalism.
More destruction...
Wow. Just, wow.
