Magic on South Australia's 'almost' coast

The Fleurieu Peninsula, it’s a fickle beast.
There’s never an issue with swell on the exposed beaches. In fact it’s usually the other way around - too big.
When it does settle down to that perfect 3-5 foot range, there’s always something not quite right: Too rippy, too windy, too straight..the list goes on.
But every now and then the planets align and it pumps, providing Victor and Adelaide surfers with a taste of the quality more regularly found further afield.
Saturday was one of those days with an unusually high makeable barrel ratio.
The local lads were all over it, with the lefts being the better direction, while Tim Sobels and Sam Egan picked off a couple of rare rights.

Pumping. Sunday very good there too from what I heard.
First time we've seen a gallery from the Fleurieu?!
Autumn light.
glad the neck and shoulder have healed nicely DK and SE. Get out there.
Great shots. Must tug at the heartstrings, Craigos
Ha, indeed, looked like a cracker weekend!
Definitely made the most of it...was a damn fun swell..with the sun out both days too.. awesome pics .
Hood and booties already….
A few months early by my recollections….
Nice waves though
4.3 and booties for me, was nice and comfy .. was expecting icecream headaches but it wasn't that cold .. and I took plenty of waves on the head to test out the theory .. haha it was pretty sunny so the surfers in question are probs just being sunsmart.
Looks pumping.
Why are those days in such short supply?
I seem to recall a detailed explanation on this here website a few years back?
Well...its a beachy...&(shout me down) hasnt benefitted from the vagaries of a changing climate either
yeaaaa Timmy!
Requires northerly winds or very light south winds which have a heavy east or west in them. It’s actually really consistent down there if you live there and are prepared to get in early before the wind +/- surf by yourself, sometimes with no one in the carpark.
Absolutely unsurfable days are very rare.
In contrast, epic 10/10 conditions are also rare
I think Dano's was only one paddling in hey...
Fuck yeah Danno!! Tube lord.
The very first front lit shot of Khai Adams is a cracker!
Looks like a bonza day.
Good pick up Fraser G. Dan Keelan paddling deserves max props. Legend! Hard to get into position for a bomb out there. In saying that Borgy️'s jetski assist wave is mental.
Awesome waves why did you move Craig (I know work etc..)? Looks like it has a bit of punch to something they need up at the Goldie at the moment. Would be a step off delight.
Being an Adelaide surfer requires commitment, time and enthusiasm. All of which I had but it's cold most of the year and generally the waves close to Adelaide aren't great.
Whereas a quick grovel on an onshore beachy on the East Coast is far more rewarding, no travel required and with warmer water.
The amount of pumping surf days I get on the East Coast far outweigh those ones offs back around Adelaide.
Yeah you are in the right place when you put it in perspective. I must be the only one on this site that doesn't mind winter. Sure summer is easier however the grunt you get, relatively uncrowded waves, consistency of solid swell (even at smaller sizes), and the quality of the wetties makes it very doable on the MP and if it is too big head west. Just seemed to get skunked every time I go north so much depends on the direction of where you are and if it is a good size, the breaks that handle it (on the right direction) are super crowded. Better to bypass it save your money and go tropical somewhere.
'When it does settle down to that perfect 3-5 foot range, there’s always something not quite right' reminds me of another almost coast
Wonderful to see. Indeed, like Craig, pulling at the heartstrings.
....but I do like warm(er) water, too.
I've always believed the month of May to be the month you'll be rewarded at Yorkes and, accordingly, on the Mid. So nice to see and a few waves looking close to perfection.
