Back in December 2015, we ran the First vision from Kelly Slater's Wave Pool in Lemoore.
The wave pool industry has come forward quite a ways since then.
But it's only today - almost eight years later - that Kelly's second pool has seen the light of day.
And so, here's the first vision from Kelly Slater's Abu Dhabi Wave Pool.
A different backdrop, tweaked wave, improved water colour; just some of the initial observations watching this clip. Of course, there'll be much more to come over the coming months as Hudayriyat Island opens to the general public.
Kelly reckons "I’ve surfed hundreds of incredible waves across the world and this wave in Abu Dhabi stacks up well against some of the best waves on earth."
Of course, he'd say that. But... I wouldn't mind a crack meself.

...regretfully I don't know any local farmers in Abu Dhabi.
A one hour session would most likely be deeply unsatisfactory. If it was a group of 10 people you would get a max of 2 waves and most likely just 1. You are either going to to fall on the first one or surf so carefully you might as well stand on a log at Noosa and claim that as a 500m “wave”. The reason this model has not been picked anywhere is its hugely in efficient as a business - other than a private novelty play thing for big $$. Plenty of that cash in the middle easy and no doubt a play for WSL comp.

In the water parks over there the women are in ninja rashies with a hood. Also when I was in Bahrain I saw women getting around in Hannibal Lector style face mask instead of a mesh veil or even the progressive Dubai Muslim where they can show their face(!).

You're not gunna get anyone throw more money at anything than the Arabs. And my understanding was that cost is what was holding back the size.

That said if you can make a wave 3-4' then you could make one 6'+ using the same tech, it looks like wave pools max out at 3-4' max, to add why could they split the peak Right/ Left at some point that be interesting me thinks....
The other side of the argument is that the current wave height may actually be the most commercially viable.
URBNSURF initially thought that the 'Expert' sessions - the one with the "biggest, thickest and heaviest barrelling waves" - would be the most popular. It certainly seemed to be the most frequent point of discussion after the pool went public.
But, if you check the URBNSURF calendar, it's not currently available AT ALL on any week day, and they are offering only 2x one-hour sessions on Saturday and 2x one-hour sessions on Sunday.
Urbn's barrel is so artificial it is like you are stationary and nothing like the ocean. Kelly's barrels are the real deal where you are moving at a good clip when the sections come at you.
That may be because they were charging an extra premium for switching up the dial from advanced to expert

We got in touch with Wavegarden head honcho Josema Odriozola to find out what’s limiting the size of these waves. Josema was keen to point out that the Wavegarden technology is readily scalable and capable of making bigger waves, but this would come at a cost.
“Raising the height of a wave by 0.6 meters increases the power required by two,” said Josema. “This is independent of the technology: anybody who knows how to calculate the power of a wave will be able to verify this — it is the law of nature. As the cost of the machinery is proportional to the required power, the cost of the wave machinery would therefore also potentially double, regardless of the technology.”
Along with the added energy consumption, there is the issue of all that water moving around in a confined space.
“Larger waves also require more water in the surf lagoon, and this could be as high as three times more water to gain half a meter in wave height.”

Yep, the physics of creating waves are not linear equations.
So there's that, then customer preference as Ben outlined.
But I really thought they may have been able to produce a bigger wave than this with UAE petrostate money.
If there was ever a time to show bigger waves it would have been on the opening day.........
When the wave size doubles the power needed to make that wave goes up by 11 and a bit. That's if you are highly efficient. Because when you double the height of these wake waves, you double height, you double the width and you double the crest length. That's a lot more water, and it's going faster as well. That's 2 times 2 times 2, which is 8, and then you multiply that figure by the square root of 2, which is 1.4 and a bit, which gives you 11 and a bit.

This could be the clincher. It's still a long wave, so unless the reps are higher it's not a model that can be replicated where oil sheiks or tech bros aren't abundant.
Despite the fors and againsts, it's a pretty wave and looks damn fun to surf.
X 2 on boring to watch though for a comp. I reckon I've racked up about 10 mins total watching the Lemoore comp- can't see this being any different.

I wonder how Slats reconciles this in his brain? I've always been a fan, but I can't get my head around his conflicting interests. Got to say, his turns and the wave look super buttery...especially the foam climb and the slip down the face at around 0.26. Also +1 on Dubai being a shithole (jeugasiempre). On a stopover from Europe, the vulgar wealth displays left me feeling queasy...as a non shopper, shadowing my wife in the Mega Malls - and even our motel was vomit inducing. Couldn't wait to leave.
Yep - the exact same feeling every time I'm forced to go through there. The only silver lining being the people watching, and seeing just about every different face that exists on earth, all temporarily co-existing in one place.
THEN I realise that we're all being squashed through a globalisation grinder and get glum again.
Since we're likely to see ongoing WSL events in these pools, with an already altered system to normal contests, why don't they force a more progressive approach to the wave by judging multiple criteria on a predetermined repertoire?
Think of figure skating or diving for examples; you go out there with a set and known plan with a predefined difficulty. If your plan is to do 2 reos, then a slash into a barrel, and come out to a couple more reos, then the difficulty is low and your scoring potential is low ... regardless of how far you push the tail or slide the fins.
If you come out with an original, stylish, and difficult plan, then your potential for an excellent score becomes much higher. Driving in originality will remove the boredom and repetition from the contest. One wave might see a 360 floater tail drop into a barrel and the next a switch-foot barrel, or we may see the resurgence of barrel-rolls.
The wave being relatively identical every time should allow the surfers to work out a specific routine.
I like your idea a lot! I guess the only problem is the amount of time and $$$$ required for each person to practice to perfect their routine.

Councils are asking State Govt to ditch [P] tickets in order to record multiple ongoing breaches.
They say it's all about safety...
Ongoing multiple fines are auto billed via email or mail.
So each 10 / 20 / 30 mins >1hr-3hr breaches are fined continually on allotted times until driver moves.
If surfer parks in 1hr zone & surfs 3.5 hrs expect 3 [P] fines on yer Phone!
Govt were even advocating loss of points after 3 strikes...

Recall Urbnsurf also trialled beach sand for a few days-week thru their filtration.
Andy reckons it was of no bother & just a bit of fun.
Hudayriat Desal / Wave Pool main function is to filter drinking water for 90,000 people.
Water quality on show here is far cleaner than any wave lagoon of similar scale.
Still unsure of what multi role the Pool Plays in the desal set up...but like udo.
Feel as if there may be some very fine chalk like salt silting along bottom...
Kinda like many Oz pools...you won't taste it until the pool guy tells ya it's a slight mix!
Dust storm may be a bother but the clean up should be quicker & better here than lesser able pools.
These Elevated Tracks have blow thru & are less affected by sand / dust than ground level tracks
Some asked why Dubai Metro was not underground but instead elevated...for this very same reason.
As udo implies > Wave Machine itself wouldn't hurt to have a hoodie...as Metro Trains are full bodied.
However...Machinery does work to clear large sand volume off tracks during dust storms.
(Chinese sandstorm > 127 crew /fork-Bucket /5 cars/3 rail cars > 7hrs to clear 4,000 c'm off 8kms of tracks )

Just guessing if water is being prioritized for Kelly's pool then it's likely derived from a Desal Plant.
Sept 2022 is the earliest mention of Modon in relation to disguising the Island's Desal Plant
June 2023 Ongoing Contracts were locked in which confirm Modon as ongoing priority Desal partner.
All we know is Kelly's pool of all things on Hudayriat Island should be up & running on Desal?
Secondly is that both Desal & Kelly invest mostly in Solar & have obligation for this Island as such.
Find it hard to believe that WR wavepool is exempt & running on Town Water...that makes no sense.
Therefore tbb is basing his thoughts on this pool being stage one of Modon's Island desal project.

Thanks Sprout...think that best explains the Concept of the Big W Bank in the centre of the Pool.
First Up notice how all inner facing banks are deeper than outer facing shallower banks.
That may prove more significant with less water in the pool...as it may wash over the outer banks.
Meaning more attention to lowering speed to hold swell on shallow outer banks.
Wot you may or not read here is strictly based on Kelly's Reef Formula applied to the Big W.
tbb is adding nothing other than what Kelly said & designed in this pool...all will soon pick up on that!

tbb has allowed for Kelly's Dual Speed formula upon each of his inner / outer L/R reef breaks.

Note : Same Beginner Banks fire up on both 'Full & Lower speed' (see below) to intro more patrons

One could return at same speed / Pro + Beginner [L] surfers.

Return Slower speed for change to (Back up crew) of Intermediate > Cruisers > Beginners.
In other words give max flexibility for many Mates of differing Surfing levels to share a session...got it!
This changing of speed allows for Ultimate Return Mix of maximum banks of flip depth & direction
Then also alternatively flip speed from each end to give a natural D'bah shifting freak peaks set up.
Easy to skip over this bit but please don't...as this may represent the guts of the matrix...
Recall many crew questioning the down time...well this dual speed option may just get around that...
Having a 2 speed option may prove handy but only if all these banks line up...that's a massive if!
Coz if any of these banks misbehave then it only fouls the the whole gig for longer...Huge gamble it is!
Mostly coz this is some else's pool on the other side of the World...no longer skirt lifting about the backyard.

Slower Speed = Inside Shallow Reefs...
Can see how the slower Speed lines up 3 L/R Banks
1st Bank = Semi Pro / Intermediate (Large-Mid size shallow barrels) 100m L/R (Possibly Either / Both)
One needs to examine if this pool is only part filled > Current inside bank only > More water L/R banks
2nd Bank = Intermediate / Cruisers (Mid sized Fullest wave > shallow small wave) 60m L/R
3rd Bank = Beginners (Small size Full > shallow smaller wave) 40m L/R
Shares from above Full speed mode as dual beginner banks for all sessions to suit majority of patrons.

What if the tube section circled in red can be lowered to allow more of the swell to travel to the "W'' area.

As for size...array of affordable large wide Speed humps that could be weighted or suctioned on.
One could work a slightly weighted design to self Suction that Stays in place to lever off!

trip to indo $5000... how many seconds of truly memorable wave stick in your memory? But at least you are paying $500 a second for something truly worthwhile.
I'm shit at maths, however I know that some of the best things that happen on an Indo surf trip don't happen in the surf.

Happy to be proven wrong but I honestly think I would be bored before the session even ended.
In terms of wave quality and potential length of ride, the Slater wave pool seems to exceed all other wave pools by a very long way. It’s not surprising that there is a premium price.
It’s outside my price range and I suspect I have more fun on wonky days at local breaks than I would have there. I wouldn’t knock back a free ticket though.

Clicking through the booking dates, looks like a lot of slots have already been booked in November. Probably a good business idea as there must be a lot of cashed up people with UAE stopovers on their way to other parts of the world. And don't need to plan ahead taking your own surfing gear, just rock up and surf in boardies.
