Seeking the news the Woz won't deliver, Swellnet sought the help of longtime reader Lanky Dean. After stumping up half a pack of Oreos, a 64 oz bottle of Dr Pepper, and a soon-to-expire SIM card, we set LD the task: Walk the track, talk to locals, and get the feeling on the ground at Lowers.
And with that, Deano delivered...sort of.
Don't ask for small servings here (captions are a mix of mine and Lanky Dean's)
The waves have been on the pump since last Saturday. Looks like swell will continue into next week. The water color was amazing. The smell not so much....
The air temp is in the 70s to 80's (that's roughly 20 to 30 C - Ed)
There's been lots of activity around San Clemente. Lots of different people cruising around looking for surfers in the Final 5.
Most people I talked to were well aware of the contest happening with strong local support of Griffin Colapinto. One fan in town was backing Jack.
One person I talked to who didn't surf said that he thought Toledo would win.
The Don is his rightful place next to JC
Amtrak's prime coastal real estate
The land of the free
Thumbs up from Renato, at left, and Ricardo Toledo who's saving his pink shirt for comp day
Filipe talking high performance design with noted alt-shaper Tyler Warren
Father of both Greg and Rusty, and Trestles lifeguard of thirty-year standing, Steve Long. Looking closely around the site there's a hint of boosterism towards Griffin over the actual world number one, Filipe Toledo
Chris Cote comes in peace, online commenters not so much
Pickles and a Micro Wave - that's Dean's line not mine
Commentators snuggle in for live call of today's warm up
Looking the part

'All work and no play makes Griffin a dull boy' - With Griff standing in for Jack Nicholson, the No 1 ticket holder of the Colapinto fan club wins best T-shirt (just edging out the Wozzle's effort)

Maybe this is the right format , just wrong place . the photos capture the mood better than the vids .
A Ziff sighting!
Shoulda asked him about ELO
Sweet!
Nice work LD and Stu.
Coupla points.
Toledo on Thrusters. His quad was amazing but not as good for airs.
When he rides a thruster in small waves he does more airs.
Ewing's board looks very narrow- not good for Trestles.
Griff would have an equipment advantage with Mayhem.
Earwig's narrow boards might not be a bad choice if it's 6ft+
Are you kidding, EE ripped the bag out of every heat but the 2nd in the final. Was unlucky to lose the 1st final heat. Too slow out out of the blocks in the 2nd, couldn't catch up. Was probably knackered too from surfing 4 heats instead of 2. Needs to finish top two next year and take it out. Form surfer of the comp for mine. Love his style, way better than Toldeo's, so much more flow, whereas Toledo is bog standard jerky brazzo gear. And when will the judges get tired of brazzo's being spinning tops and claiming every wave they surf. Bring on the hate.
x 2
Great pics LD.
Is that Bob Ross next to JC and The Don? (Just a happy accident?)
Go Jack!
Why have they got contest rashies on?
And how did Greg and Rusty Long grow up at Trestles and become two of the biggest big wave tube pigs going around
WSL rashies for the warmups? Nice to see Fil arrive now its 2' :)
Onya Lanky Dean.
Now we just need to get someone into the commentary booth.
Like in Formula 1, practise sessions before the real event is a great idea. Not having to fight for waves to practise on during free for all sessions.
Would love to get my hands on those comp boards and run a tape over them for each competitor
Need to wear comp rashies so free surfers know who keeps getting all the waves..no mistaking identity.. great pics guys !!!
This explains your question in the other thread LD, sorry no can do. You'd've already needed to be there (and back) anyway.
title match best of 3....is 3 waves each or 3 heats....
Best of three heats mate between Fil and whoever lands at two
This is my thinking, finals in waves that a wave pool can come close to matching.. I think there is some evil thinking at play here....
This wave obviously suits the tricksters rather than the carvers! The real deal is 6 to 8 ft Pipe ! This format @ Pipe would / should give you a legit world champ! If it gets solid @ Trestles ( like 8ft+ ) does it handle it??? If so my $$$ on E.E.
