Cars In The Water At Teahupoo

Swellnet Dispatch

Just 24 hours after a glorious day at Teahupoo, where the sun shined rainbows through spray from 15 foot barrels, an altogether different situation unfolded. Mid-morning, as surfers either relived tales over a coffee and baguette or hurriedly scraped the dregs from the dropping swell, a heavily-laden storm cell dropped its contents on the hills behind Teahupoo.

Tim Bonython, who was in Tahiti to film yesterday's swell, had just got to the lineup for a second day of filming when the mayhem began:

"Once we got out there, BOOM, the heavens released probably the heaviest rain in the history of the place. After videoing for about ten minutes the rain and lightning got so crazy that we thought it might be a good idea to head in. Vetea David and his partner Tahina rounded up all the surfers and gave them all a lift in. Lightning was flashing everywhere with a constant rumble of thunder."

The village of Teahupoo lies on a small flood plain between the mountains and the sea, with the collected rainfall from the valley turning the creek into a torrent, eventually bursting its banks and flooding the whole village. Nine cars ended up in the sea, as did innumerable household items gathered by the cascading waters.

The bungalow Tim was renting was inundated but fortunately his computer, holding all the footage of yesterday's waves, was stored beyond reach of the flood waters. An almost trivial concern against a catalogue of destruction.

A crowdfunding account has been established by Hinatea Boosie who writes:

"We lost our houses, we lost our cars, some families lost everything! We need you! The river broke and most of the houses nearby were underwater.

"My name is Hinatea and I will try to raise as much as possible money or anything to help the local community here. Thank you for sharing!"

And while you're in the mood for giving, Greg Long has established a GoFundMe account for Tom Lowe who hit the bottom at Teahupoo, broke six ribs and was airlifted to hospital in Papeete. French authorities won't allow him to leave until his bill is squared away and Tom's medical insurance won't cover it.

Long is hoping to raise all $30K with the total currently sitting just over $10,000.

Find it Interesting that surfline has gone mute on this horrific state of events but just a day prior was very vocal on posting a vid or update every three minutes. Too hard to repost a help fund link or just standard surf media pump n dump form ?

sick of people complaining about surfline. unsubscribe and don't use, simple. However some might find that hard to, aka as walnuts.

Why didn't he check his insurance would cover it when he is surfing one of the most dangerous surf spots in the world? Pretty essential I would have thought.

Agree memla - why buy insurance if you dont know what it covers you for? Does seem a little wierd tho - even the most basic travel insurance covers you for unlimited medical. Unless your riding a bike in Bali or other specified activities. Surfing Chopes seems unlikely to be on that list IMO. Insurance companies are pricks tho - always looking for ways not to pay you

I've looked into it in the past for Indo surf trips and remember seeing an exclusion for "big wave surfing" or something along those lines

Probably worth a topic on its own. Just got a quote from STI for a couple of weeks in the Ments for NIB Comprehensive it is $204. This is full medical evac even if you call yourself a pro. If in a contest the contest needs insurance when competing the out of comp reverts back. Not sure what insurance his nibs had but it must have been dodgy.

Yeah would be worth a topic.

At G-land a few years back a mate badly injured himself and needed to get choppered out. Fully covered by insurance.

Yep. A story is warranted though. In early 2020 I hit the reef in West Papua and once we got a line through to Cover-More and explained ourselves, then they were all over it. Between language and time zone differences, dodgy reception, and the medical urgency at hand, they did everything you'd expect of an insurance company.

Couldn't fault them and after that experience I wouldn't use anyone else.

It’s simple you just use a broker when you need something specialised

All I could find was a private station on the west coast (via wunderground.com), and it only 4mm. Must have been very intense, local thunderstorms.

Edit: and one on the north coast that got 47mm in a few hours. Nothing groundbreaking.

The video footage shows floodwaters under blazing sunshine. Nothing unusual on a large continent, however on a small island where the catchment only extends perhaps a few kilometres inland that's telling.

The storm has completely cleared before the water has flowed the short distance to sea level.

My take? Direct hit from a short and intense storm cell, amplified by the river valley.

Somehow my reply last night didn't appear; must have forgotten to hit 'Comment'.

That sounds very plausible, although I imagine they get their fair share of high-intensity tropical downpours, so this one must have been something special.

The topography is definitely scary in terms of funnelling a good catchment onto a very low floodplain.

I'll do some more digging.
