Woz Change CT Trophy Name To 'The Duke'
At the recent WSL dinner it was announced that, from this season onwards, the Championship Tour trophy will be called the Duke Kahanamoku WSL Champions’ Trophy.
Which no doubt will be shortened to the Duke.

It's not the first time the father of modern surfing has had an award in his name. From 1965 to 1984, the Duke Kahanamoku Invitational - also shortened to the Duke - was a contest held on Oahu's North Shore, usually at Sunset, and long considered the world's premier contest. To a large degree, the Duke has been adequately replaced by the Eddie, which began the year the last the Duke was run.
It was, said Erik Logan while dressed in pink chinos, "in the spirit of inspiration and our deep connection to Hawaii," that the Woz chose the name change.
“I think Duke represents the root of surfing at its core,” said John John tautologically. “Coming from Hawaii and knowing the history of Duke and what he did bringing surfing around the world; he’s really turned surfing into an amazing sport.”
Using the Duke's name and likeness arose is in partnership with the Kahanamoku family and Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation. In the past, the Duke's image has been co-opted to sell the image of Hawaii fuelling many legal spats between the Kahanamoku family, owners of the Duke's trademark, and various other involved parties. The disputes have been volatile and undignified, as illustrated in this article.

The audacity of the WSL to think they can bastardize long dead Cultural Icons in an attempt to add legitimacy and credibility to their flailing billionaire backed business is a tragic comedy.
The WSL clearly jealous of the 'Eddie' and Backdoor Shootout (in memory of Duke) success and desperately wants that prestige and legendary status attached to their brand.
Hopefully they have at least partnered with some local community groups in Hawaii and local people actually gain something from this blatant cultural appropriation.

As for the shaper awards boycott it by supporting your favourite local shaper as you should be, if you can. can it get any lower, I think it can if you continue to grasp at straws and selling product.
