Ten years after Peak Dane, Marine Layer gets a reboot
Over the weekend, Dane Reynolds announced that, five years after Marine Layer Productions wound down, he's gonna put more gas in the tank.
"Think I’m gonna start blogging again. I know blogs are dead but still feels like the right platform to post surf videos and opinion and include my friends I surf with every day. Stay tuned."
Recent digital outings by Dane, who's now 35 years old and a father of three, shows the flame hasn't dimmed. The pack may have closed on him...hell, you could mount an argument that he alone inspired the performance leap, but he still has the capacity to stun with a single big move or combo.
A decade ago, Dane recorded his highest year end ranking, equal fourth with Taj, but it was his performance that year at Snapper against Parko that had the media and fans gushing. In a clash of styles, Dane's full face turns and wild abandon vs Parko's style and precision, the Californian comboed Parko, 19.20 vs 17.47.
A quick selection of headlines from that night:
"Surfing Soapbox: Changing of the surfing tour guard"
"Champions Fall as Dane Reynolds Detonates"
"Is the future finally here?"
"Dane Reynolds And The Heat That Saved Professional Surfing"
Next day Dane was comboed by Jordy, 8.96 vs 16.30 - he was nothing if not mercurial.
Comments
This could* be great news.
To me a large part of Dane's allure is his colourful personality, his music and overall artistic taste – as seen during the ML days.
Let's hope the use of the Former logo is tasteful and sparing.
One of the more curious things about that time was that Quik were paying Dane $300,000 a month, yet the place where most punters were exposed to him - i.e at Marine Layer - had zero Quik promo.
It was unreal, but also a bit of a head scratcher from a sponsorship POV.
Here's hoping it stays the same.
Ten grand every day....
Even got a copy of that contract here somewhere.
I wouldn’t be surprised if you’ve got the Shroud of Turin stuffed somewhere in the fabled Swellnet Archival Room.
How does one just have a pro surfers contract lying around in the office?
It was publicly available when it was the subject of Quik's Chapter 11 proceedings.
Might have contributed toward the Chapter 11 as well lol
How would that heat score today?
Would be good to watch the whole thing for context, but I get a suspicion the judges may have been swept up in Dane-mania.
I remember watching it on the webby and when it was over Joel ran across the sand swinging his board, not violently, but enough to discourage any kiddy from fronting up and asking for an autograph.
He clearly wasn't in the mood.
Yeah context is a big issue here as he obviously won the first tussle with better wave selection, but I reckon Joel nailed the second. Joel's surfing is still beautiful to watch and I reckon he put a great wave together on that second ride. Dane was up and down but is was only just a wave by his standards.
I think that Dane’s attitude is a very welcome breath of fresh air after the stifling and synthetic overperfumed atmosphere the Gorgonesque WSL would have popular surf culture exist in.
Dane’s honesty vs Oprah’s anal-bleached , woke ex-handmaiden......not much decision making required there as to who I’d rather look to with the direction of the sport.
Gary watched Dane's Chapter 11 again last night to celebrate this news. It's the second-most watched video in Gary's house after 'Pumping Iron'.
Insane surfing
that was really good but moreso his attitude
"I feel like at some point I need to thank Quiksilver, I mean, Young Guns first chapter, they put me on the map. But, who is Quiksilver, who do I thank? Shareholders? Bob McKnight? Guys that worked there when I first signed up, or the guys that work there now? Oaktree Financial?
I really do appreciate my time there and the projects we worked on and (laughs) the money they gave me, but everyone I feel that was responsible has been fired or layed off, so let's band together and rage against the machine."
Peak superbank, insane waves, can't believe Dane won that heat given the surfing Joel did, PEAK (average 10 second barrel) superbank.
What's Marine Layer?
I always liked to think Dane picked the tune.
If you know it, you know.
Excellent
yeah good stuff, forgot how good he is...
the melodics. shocking.
Dane Reynolds, at some point became became the real life version of Barney Gumble from the simpsons.
The two turn combo before the barrel on the 9.93 was the best part.
Seamless between the first top turn, back into the bottom turn and off the top again.
"Think I’m gonna start blogging again. I know blogs are dead but still feels like the right platform to post surf videos and opinion and include my friends I surf with every day. Stay tuned."
Attaboy .. !
Watch the new Marinelayer get more views than anything WSL.
