Watch: Weird Waves Season 2: Gaso-Line (Portugal)

In this episode of Weird Waves Dylan Graves and the WW Crew prove ferry waves are real. We’re talking specifically about ferries that take people from the blue-collar town of Barreiro, Portugal to the capital city of Lisbon as a way to dodge morning traffic. The new wave generating boats have sparked a new surf community in an unlikely place. One person’s commuter traffic is another’s wonderland.

Well done all round, that was so fun! Thanks for sharing Ricardo.

There's something profoundly satisfying about transmogrifying the 9 to 5 commute into a wave of pure energy which becomes pure stoke :)

Thanx again swellnet...plenty of Stoke again!
Heavy Metal Surfers...some weird waves are natural or blended, this one is up front.

2004 -2009 google shows new Ferries' swell causing massive sandbank erosion.
(Gap) 2012 google shows sandbanks returned, now with waves breaking on them.
Ricardo's 2012 Surf Mag line ups can be easily seen on Google Earth of same year.
Oddly resembles overhead of 5 waves Surf lakes (well worth a look!)

2009-2012 Something happened to halt erosion + faster timetable + breaking waves.
Pretty sure there is a Tagus River study amongst 'Global Ferry wake - papers'
Said to be one of Europe's busiest Ports...Wake/Prop tech would be world beating.

Rains wash heavy metals down river into basin & Ferries stir them up into wave face.
Then contaminating #1 pristine beach ...Ponta dos Corvas, looks real manky now!
The Ocean/East side shows targeted erosion has damaged Jetty/s + Dry Docks.
Loss of defence access shows Ferry contract is the reserve of a well to do Family.

Erosion, now seems to have settled but not the stirring of Tagus River bed silt.

Any promotion of Ferry Waves ridicules loss of Tagus River #1 bathing beach.
Could be viewed as Yuppie boy toyz shitting on Tagus River recreational landmark.
Unashamedly saluting speed & wake slowly destroying once communal beach.

In any case, you'd wanna test water along the wave banks before inviting others.
Lisbon Newspaper Editorial Cartoonist gives you all an unprecedented sample...

Just how weird do the crew want their Waves?

Not too dissimilar to the guys riding the waves off the supertankers in Texas

I love this series, used to work at Rhodes in Sydney, the warehouse backed onto the Parramatta River and i used to watch the rivercats go past on my lunch break, there was a bank under Ryde Bridge that would throw a little peak, and while unsurfable for us, i would imagine ants on paddle pop sticks treating it like Sunset.

Yes i was still doing drugs then.

Jeez you’re good TBB, was just thinking of people riding that wave off the ferry at Cleveland.
Think Bede Durbo rode it a few times too.

The big quicksilver boat that heads out to the Great Barrier Reef out of Port Douglas creates a better wave at 10am everyday. 1 wave per day.

Very true Vic local,I lived there in 93-95 and would c it whenever it was convenient to ride my pushy, during a cyclone one year it was solid 5 foot and looked like guillotines on Sth coast, I still kick myself for not going out at least once, but crocs reign supreme there as do box jellyfish

Great fun I loved Portugal when I was there the closes thing to OZ in Europe. People are fun and laid back just like Ricardo. The guy is the real thing.
