Watch: John John's best according to John John
So what's an injured surfer to do as he recuperates in bed, unable to surf or sail or skate?
How about a spot of video curating?
A surprise appearance on JJF's YouTube channel was this best of clip, compiled by John John himself. Another surprise is that it's just 90 seconds long. Perhaps it's the first of many installments and he's gonna drip feed them online? He's got a while to do it.
Anyway, here's a small slice of John John's best, shot between 2011 and 2019.

Some nutz airs!
the best.
That turn at 57 sec is unbelievable.
Aye. Trumped only by the turn at 51 seconds.
What wasn't unbelievable?
Its easy to forget stuff and then after being reminded it all comes back, he surfs soooo well. Unfortunately it's the airs that are becoming his Achilles heel for his knee :)
Yep. That was always going to happen, he's too tall.
I hope there's no 3rd time as it's not a good injury to carry or nurse on with, it'll always be in the back of his mind. Seems crazy that one punt can rob him of a world title. Body shape/size is interesting, look at Medina he's built like a brick shit house and seems indestructible.
Yeah, Medina's tall as well hey?
I always through the extra torso length created more torque on the joints..
When I got to about 26/27 years old, all the twisting and torquing layback stuff was causing issues. You know, board going one way, body going the other. Before that I remember twisting my ankle badly at DBah doing an air at about 17 as well. Maybe Medina just isn't unco?
Medina's got really broad shoulders with a rugby players build, solid and powerful. This possibly gives him great co-ordination combined with overall strength, a truly formidable opponent. He seems super mono focused as well not much of a talker more cyborg than anything else.
The other thing is that the Brazilians (Medina, FT, Ferreira) aren't influenced by skate culture so aren't looking to tweak airs or delay the spin as much as JJF does.
For my mind that's a good thing, not a criticism.
Pertinent point Stu.
You're right -could be a constitutional thing. Maybe john's joints just are as healthy or are prone to lax...???
Hey, is that a photo of rainbow pumping that you've got as your icon?
Burleigh, but effin good guess though, just a few K's off
Big crazy stylish turns on big waves are so good to see. No one does it better
You been to Indo yet, GF?
Yeah mixed bag, some pumping waves, fair bit of wind, lots of boats.
Bummer about the bad stuff. How'd your boards go?
They’re impressive on a screen, reckon if it happened in front of you in the water your jaw would drop and your eyes would pop out of their sockets.
Has anyone done a turn as good as that one around the 50 sec mark ? Everything about this clip is so good.Except its not long enough .
I loved those big cut backs on big waves, clean as
Being bipola I expected your second comment to be different to your first
Credit paid.
Ha post of the week!
Most paid surfer in the history of the sport .
As many great waves, there's been great down time.
He has to be feeling a pay cut coming......
I’m sure he’ll cope
have to be set for life, surely?
even if the tap got turned off tomorrow.
More so coming from the brands perspective. He may have actually buried hurley in some respects.
If so he is proof that no one surfer really creates global brand growth.
They invested almost all of their budget in one surfer. Now that surfer cannot surf and maybe will never surf to the same potential again.
That's no diversification of talent ,resources or forecasting a Plan B........
JJF has spent half his time on hurley laid up, wonder if he was getting paid?
Surely they have clauses in contracts for that right?
At the time JJF signed his first contract with Hurley, Brendan Thomas wrote an astute editorial for Surfer describing the companies involved in the escalating bidding war as analogous to surfers getting so caught up in their ego that they push each other far up the point and beyond the usual takeoff zone, so deep that no-one can make it.
Yeah, I was living in Hawai'i when JJF signed to Hurley.
Lets just say the coconut wireless was going off.
Not everyone was happy with deal....considering almost everybody on Hurley in Hawai'i lost their contracts around the same time.
Funny thing is jj was hanging out with the Quik tm at the time. Who is an old friend , I thought for sure he was going to sign with...
The turns at 52 and 57 are art...
In other news Nike Looking to sell hurley...........
JJF / Hurley - 8 yrs 30 mill plus...
Bummer for john john he would have prob gone all the way,
Don't think he would be giving a hell about a possible pay cut as mentioned in the above comments... This guy just clearly wants to surf and would be more spewing about his world title chances than anything else. A one in a kind surfer hoping for a speedy recovery so we can see more of those silky smooth sk8 style lines.
When you talk about JJF and "The Turn" everyone knows what you mean. It's like he's able to do Tom Carroll's snap at Pipe any time he feels like it. This is why he's the best surfer in the world at the moment. No one else can do that turn. It never gets old.
True.
Which I thought about during the Bells comp, when all he did was the same bloody layback on every wave.
I was hoping for those big arcing downcarves, but they never came. Great surfing, but little variety, I thought.
I know what you mean, although I think this has a more to do with the limitations of Bells as a surfspot rather than something wrong with JJF’s surfing. Personally I find Bells one of the most boring stops on the tour to watch. The wave just doesn’t lend itself to high performance surfing. They should just forget about Bells all together and hold the comp exclusively at Winkipop. It’s a much better wave.
John John is in a league of his own - could watch him surf all day esp in big waves
