Watch: Ry Craike // Surfing in virtual reality
It's new tech on the block and the jury is still out...
Yeah, the GoPro Fusion can do things never before done, so let's chalk one up for exclusivity and get right down to brass tacks: Does the 360° view that Ry Craike shows here not seem unrepresentative of the surfing experience? A simulacrum of the real thing in the same way True Surf, the surfing video game, sorta looks like the real thing yet doesn't. Strange motions. Weird perspectives.
One thing though, you can knock the technology, but not the subject matter. Few of these barrels are absurd.

Wow that was pretty unique. It's like the surfer has his own water proof drone that can follow his every move. An all seeing waterproof flying eyeball. I think its a 'weirdly' good representation of the surfing experience
Wonder what it would look like in 3D?
That close out barrel in this clip was insane, and beautiful.
I'd be happy to see more, the bigger the screen the better.
Well it was unique it was clever, but its now done, don't need to see it done again though.
Happy just to see waves from the front, side and small snippets from the air and tube.
Who’s that Maddog right behind him the whole time.
He must rip!!!
Bit confused is it supposed to be like the Hobgoods one that you could move around or am I supposed to get my kids VR goggles on?
Some more wipeout underwater footage on shallow reefs would be interesting - like the last shot. You always wonder how close to the reef you are as you tumble. The wipeout remains a relatively unexplored image opportunity. Chopes would be a sight to see.
Some of this less representative, some more ... I’ll be interested to see how footage improves as folks get better using this tech... can be another fresh, interesting perspective for a while at least, and they see how it fairs over time, novelty value only or something more enduring - not sure ... makes me want to go back west though
Cool tech and great images.
I can't begin to tell you how awful that bloody music was though.
