Watch: Ryan Callinan // Portugal and Newy
Anyone else reckon R'Cal has improved his game since the last time he made the tour? If his wildcard performances in Europe were anything to go on he's developed a bit of swagger, and his surfing both on the webcast and here shows it ain't unfounded.
Always capable of the Big Move, he's now mixing them up, and best of all, linking them up on the same wave.
There's a lot of things to like about this clip.
Though the music ain't one of them.

Ripping...really hope he does well next year.
Have to agree - the music was so far removed from the images it's not funny.
Perhaps it's related to the mysterious trend over the last ten years where it's now fashionable to sing along to John Farnham and Darryl Braithwaite at the pub, in a non-ironic kinda way. One of the beer companies made a bloody ad about it too.
No, it's not OK.
I heard a song from a muso friend a few years back...he was playing on piano and singing...it was amazing but really familiar...about a third of the way through I realised it was a John Farnham song. It was unrecognisable until you caught some really famous lyrics. It was the original arrangement from the original songwriter and he apparently HATED the John Farnham version but lived with it as he had never earned more money of anything else he'd written.
ha ,,,yes it is,,Ben
Lovely stuff, and the bigO for background. Plus RC knows how to use his hands and arms all the way through a wave, guy never really loses it.
Nice work RC
Great surfing, great music and great use of zoom to keep those locations hidden!
insta whores take note !!!!!!!!!!
Fellas..... Fellllllaaaaaaaas!! In observing your enduring musical critiques of the many many many surf clips posted here, it is clear that you lads have no musical taste what-so-ever ! The Big Roy O is right up there with Johnny Cash! Just because you are still all dealing with the 90s teenage smoke haze (we all went through) doesn't mean all clips should have high energy, strong bass and rhythm and/or aggressive thrash sound tracks (although Fridge [look them up grommets] and the Celibate Rifles and Yothu Yindi are perhaps the pinnacle of surf video content)... For a recent example of the modern appreciation of music, sound a waves. Take anything that "the new Messiah" has released... his movie "Done", in particular, shows some deft editing and creativity in his use of the sound archive, with Zager And Evans - In The Year 2525 - backing his hifi J'Bay session being one prime example....
Show some broader appreciation of art and culture you miserable misanthropes - alby falzon would be ashamed .....
When the music doesn't match the surfing it doesn't necessarily mean the music is bad, it just means it doesn't match the surfing.
Does every single song in your vast collection match surfing? Of course not, but it doesn't mean it's a bad song, right?
Who says it doesn't match the surfing ?.......
I do.
400 words on why you do, Stu, an opinion piece, something for the boys for Christmas.
Could be 4,000 words, Pete. You reckon they - or you - are gonna be swayed?
I've given up arguing with philistines - call it an early New Year resolution. 'Cos here's the thing, some people have terrible taste, and some of us, just a small yet charmed minority, don't.
Hahaha...
We, the small yet charmed.
Self appraisal needs no recomendation . @ Stu net.
opinions are like arseholes Stu.... and in this instance, I believe you are showing that yours share a scent.
One day some bright spark will discover a couple of The Necks half hour pieces .... threading music it is, perfectly suited for premium surf viewing.
I am with you there, fantastic background music.
Gary's never been a fan. He's a no neck kinda guy
John Lee Hooker and Carlos Santana then ... how could you resist?
KKK
Ben is so suave.
My favourite movie of the 90s
I loved it. The big O and RC. You got it. Never thought big turns with an air would mesh together the chorus of this song. I found it quite amusing and relaxing. Nice.
now I'm imagining Taj to Elvis-Blue suede shoes.
Nice to not see any double pump bottom turns when the waves get over 4 feet. Great surfing.
Awesome lefts.
c'mon crew-that's the travellin wilbury's- get it right- u got it!
Gotta say that was pretty impressive and i thort the big O was a good change...sorta worked in a weird way.
Surfing insane. Easily in top 5 of best surfers in the world at the moment in my humble opinion. A surfer every Aussie can be proud of. Humble, stylish and powerful. Stoked on Royboys crooning in the background.
Ripping! And great choice of music.
the music is a classic from 1990 , i think the traveling willbeerys with the big o singing , , brings back fun times camping , surfing at era .
I'm predicting a top 10 finish in the 2019 WSL. However I do live, surf and breathe the Merewether lifestyle. Great song too
Get back to ladies then........
Great lunchbreak viewing. Ripping as always. Good luck in 2019 Ryno….GO THE TROMBONE!!!!!.... sick song and well observed by DavetheRave...sick album that one
Absolutely ripping, he built up some super solid momentum the last couple events hopefully that transfers to Pipe and next year, good luck R-Cal!
As for the backing music... HAHAHA!!!

Yeah, he rips. They all rip at that level. So I'm going to be critical.
I don't like his big carves. He struggles to hold them. They look forced and slow. Anyone who has to grab the rail to hold their cutback has a problem. It looks like the board will skip out any second and he doesn't really get into a next move after a big carve. I'm assuming it's the lack of rocker in the board. All his good looking moves flatten out the board and get very front footed and blow the tail.
He needs to fix that to get better transition between the big carve and the blow tail if he wants to do more than just make the CT.
And I had the sound off so no comment on that.
Grab rail cutties are a choice for style and variety, not to give hold through them.
They're farken hard to do well.
