Watch: Drew McPherson // The morning light

Swellnet Dispatch

No pumps or tweaks, but instead Drew McPherson chooses an early line and sticks with it, the only changes possible are via subtle weight adjustments: weight on the front foot, weight on the back, and when the wave delivers, such as at 1:06, then the weight goes dead centre and it's a timed run the channel.

Yet another mellow clip of Drew courtesy of Need Essentials.

'No pumps or tweaks' you can't on those single fins, in fact you would be lucky to turn them at all they are woofers with fleas.

So not true, it is all about subtlety of movement. Sure, if you push too hard off the back foot you will probably stop dead in the water but you can swoop and arc all day long in the right waves. A completely different way of surfing and fun in its own right.

I have lived through singles, twins, thrusters and quads and the only one I would never, ever go back to are the singles. I remember thinking when the twins came in, how good is this you can actually turn a board! I am sure many of my vintage feel the same way.

Ha, I get where you are coming from. Learnt to surf on single fins in the pre thruster days but certainly enjoyed the shift to more manouverable boards. However, in the last few years or so I have gone back to enjoying some variation in the quiver. The one board I can always rely on to put a smile on my face has been a 6'9"single fin hull. I am sure no one else likes what they are seeing when I surf it but I am having fun! Hope you get a few this weekend.

Funny you say that one of my favourite boards from the late 70's was a Sanci single fin and I think was around about 6'9". Really lovely board when it was good but you guided more than turned it.

At least this Need Essentials clip doesn't feature that self-absorbed wanker Torren Jerk-Off Martyn filming at waves that are not be filmed at.

This man can surf. Very nice to watch.

And re singles, some the best surfing I saw on my recent Indo trip was a 50yo WA guy on a single fin. Hauling with style.

Depends on the single fin & waves you are surfing! Gunther Rohn made me a channel bottom single fin that went unreal @ a certain down the line big walled point break. Delivering down the line speed & manoeuvrability equal to any board I've ever had the privilege to surf on & I've ridden a few in my 40 years of surfing.
