The official Founders' Cup forecast

In just under two days the hooter will sound on the much anticipated Founders Cup, the teams event at Kelly’s Lemoore Surf Ranch. Five national teams, each comprised of five surfers will compete against each other in a new format. The WSL has recently posted the format online, and you can read it over here.

But a surf competition is nothing without waves, so how’s the forecast holding up? Well, the organisers are in luck with a combo swell on the cards - a mix of short range north-east swell and short range south-east swell - that’s sure to play well for the region.

I like the look of each of these systems. The last few years we’ve seen a number of them develop over the Lemoore coast and they rarely miss the mark - at least not while the cameras are running. The Surf Ranch coastline is totally exposed to the swell train so whatever energy is available, it receives. Makes good use of it too.

Consistency ain’t gonna be high, and the winds too will be tricky. We may see a period of slack wind early on both days - think photo ops - before the land heats up and a north-northwest breeze develops. That direction is straight into the face of the right, but it’s coming over the shoulder on the lefts. So it’s gonna be hollow rights and floaters all the way home on the lefthanders. Advantage Adriano.

So then, size? The models are jumping about depending on whether you measure in surfers feet, face height, from the back, or you’re an adult learner and kilojoules are your metric. Let’s call it three foot in surfers feet and consign all the other methods - especially kilojoules for god's sake - to the Central Desert of Redundancy.

Each swell will hang in for a few days, enough time for the Founders Cup to run plus allow the VIP ticket holders to chip a few dollars off their $10,000 price tags.
