Swellnet Dispatch

If you live in the Sutherland Shire then get along to Cronulla RSL tonight to hear Phil Jarratt 'fess up to all manner of misdeeds.

Phil will be having a Q&A with Stu Nettle in the Sunroom at the RSL. The audience can expect large digressions as Phil recounts the early days of surfing in his hometown of Wollongong plus stories from the world beyond.

Also on the night, Phil will be showing recently unearthed 1960s surf footage of Bobby Brown, and Steve Core will be playing classic 70s footage of Wollongong's best goofy - who'll also be in the audience - surfing a secret left down the coast. Hmmm...

The event starts at 6pm for a 7pm start - lotsa time to drink and mingle. Cronulla RSL, Gerrale Street, Cronulla.

Admission is free but bring money for beer and to buy a copy of Phil's book - go on, get it signed!

Was a great night and congratulations to both you and Phil for putting this together. We really need to capture more of these conversations. It's not only about the surfing but for me the sense of connection and community of surfing that's important here. There were some real characters in the audience that have been in or around the surf industry since the late 50's early sixties whose stories should also be heard. When is the next one?

So many stories, eh? And not just from Phil with the mic - though his were great as always - but also from the other guys in the room. It often happens at these events that conversation before and after reveals real gems. Would love to do more events like it.

Special thanks to Steve Core. He did most (all?) of the heavy lifting organising the night.

If you're on the Northern Beaches, Phil's gonna be at Avalon Bowlo with Simon Anderson and Kirk Wilcox this Friday night.

It'd be great if these kind of conversations could be recorded and put up as podcasts. I'm always looking for something to listen to at work.

Exactly SD. What really struck home for me was two things in particular:
1. We need to capture the conversations before the storytellers are no longer in their earth suits
2. Those that cannot make these events both young and old need access to the conversations so the surfing community remains connected.

Times 2 Mr Fuhrious.

Oral history projects like these are well worth recording for posterity.

Was indeed a good night sans the delay from strange sound system. Nice catching up with Dave Wilson and Toni, Terry Brown and a nice lemonade to whet the whistle. Garie to the Gong was always my 1st choice to nip down for a wave and good stories from TR as well. The memories.

Podcast would indeed be good and easy to capture. Lot's from Cronulla are no longer living locally, like myself, and would have missed out save a little luck being able to attend.

I have played around making podcasts at work and, in my experience, it is always easier to transcribe a conversation than to get a good quality podcast out of it. More practice at editing audio would help, but there are also issues of continuity, ums and ahs, background noise and so on.

That's a great point.

It's easy to listen to Conversations with Richard Fidler - probably a benchmark for podcasts, IMO - and think "yeah I could do that!" - but it's somewhat akin to buying a Les Paul and thinking you'll sound like Slash.

Seen plenty of that type in the guitar shops over the years too!

Fair dinkum Stu, now venturing into MC work, well done! Another string to the bow.
