The Church of the Open Sky // Trailer - video
I've been making surf films independently now for over fifteen years now (but it's never been my day job, I'm also a primary school teacher) and the landscape has definitely changed in that time. It’s an interesting and challenging time to be a surf filmmaker, in this brave new world of two minute web clips and digital distribution.
For this film I have decided to avoid distributors altogether and to just have a go at it on my own. Vimeo-On-Demand is a great platform for indie filmmakers like me because it enables you to side-step the distribution middle-man who usually takes a cut of over half a film’s profit. But at the same time it’s a bit of an experiment for me to go out on my own with distribution. It’s a risk because I’ve poured so much of myself into this film, my time, my money, my energy and my heart. But because I’m a self-funded independent filmmaker, I want to have a shot at being independent in how I share the film with the world.
Thanks as ever for your support.
Warmest Aloha
Nathan Oldfield

Looks fantastic. Is wonderful to see the majesty of the SINGLE-FIN re-gracing the screen. We lost a lot when we eschewed them in the mad stampede of the great thruster ruse. Also nice to know that some of the top surfers are still fascinated with riding the actual wave and not the sky above it.
Is there somewhere where we can purchase a hardcopy/DVD of this movie?
Got the dvd delivered this week from Nathan's web site. Got 2 in fcat, this guy is well worth supporting.
There doesn't appear to be any hardcopies of this one, Halibut. Nathan's website sells copies of his past movies, even package deals, two-for-one etc. but Church of the Open Sky isn't among them.
Thanks Stu, I'll check it out
No worries H. Appreciate the name change too, as does the other fella.
He did a limited run. Not sure how to imbed.
Actually his website does still have them.

There is something in Nathan's films that certainly relates to a positive energy and enjoyment of surfing and Church of the Open Sky captures the feeling of why I keep surfing. You can get it on Vimeo on Demand or you can order a hard copy from Nathan's website www.nathanoldfield.com
