Last week's strong east swell is still lingering in the muscle memory, so let's revisit some powerful beachbreak action in this video by Doug MacFarlane/WozThatYou.com.
I thought Narrabeen had decent surfers, were they all somewhere else this day?
lostdoggyMonday, 13 Mar 2017 at 4:28pm
This looks like it's filmed south of the alley. You can see a big pack in the background up there.
matt79Monday, 13 Mar 2017 at 3:26pm
Using a jetski to whip into 4-6 foot close outs in a crowded line up . I think that video was a little bit embarrassing to all involved .
curly2alexMonday, 13 Mar 2017 at 6:52pm
Especially you at 3:10 ;)
goofyfootMonday, 13 Mar 2017 at 4:41pm
Gotta agree there matt79, the guys who were towing this day need to have a good look at themselves. Thats fucked.
I can't for the life of me understand the mentality of going and towing into 6ft waves when there's people paddling
Rise of the wav...Monday, 13 Mar 2017 at 6:15pm
ARGGGHHH what pisses me of more than the skis is not being there! those uneven shiffty wedgey days are so much fun. I'm like a pig rolling in shit in that it's a banquet of different wave shapes double ups, joining sections, ramps, barrels ,closeouts and more. I like a variety of saltwater in my day to much fun!
Bummer.
savanovaMonday, 13 Mar 2017 at 6:53pm
I concur with previous comments regarding jet skis in 4 foot close outs.
WANKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sarge84Monday, 13 Mar 2017 at 6:58pm
While it does look like one of them is a grom big wave training on some of those waves; go do it away from everyone. Some of those waves are only 4 foot. I'd be pretty embarrassed if that other guy was me, especially if I got recognised. Name and shame people.
Looks like the other fellas in the water are blowing up at them too.

Death cuts, that's what we called them. Taking the line on a clean close- out at Bondi on a balsa log. Eyes closed, waiting. Then the beating. Nothing has changed. Go the boys.
Mr UnderhillMonday, 13 Mar 2017 at 10:40pm
Jetskis, closeouts. Yawn.

Are these guys for real? Making the most of it eh! Fuck everyone else.
(See Tyler Wright behind the rock, comments)
WhitebaitTuesday, 14 Mar 2017 at 6:36am
Quite simply the guys paddling should have told the skis to piss-off. Paddlers have priority to a surf break.
Rise of the wav...Tuesday, 14 Mar 2017 at 7:22am
Anyone ever see that little prick flying around at no shit 100+kh in his little jetboat around swimmer/surfers at wollongong city beach? sometimes 10meters of the beach doing airs over waves back and front? see it a few times.
PeckaTuesday, 14 Mar 2017 at 8:13am
I think this video proves what I already thought. The overall standard of surfing at NN is not what it once was. There are still some very talented surfers there however the number of very average surfers there seems to have increased on any given day. It is often those very average surfers from NN that have the attitude out there. Makes me laugh. Like one knob who is a local real estate agent there. Blows up some kid, takes off and falls off. Sums it up really.
radiationrulesTuesday, 14 Mar 2017 at 10:25am
It's ironic listening to Shane Dorian talk to Occy last week about how Peahi transitioned from tow-in back to paddle-in; in particular the respectful way these too groups treat each other - in 40ft waves. Here we see jet-ski's almost run over paddle-in surfers in 4ft waves? Agree with previous comments - how can anyone involved in this act consider themselves as being real in the moment? Did you reflect on the stink of fuel you're pushing onto everyone in the line-up? Let alone the danger of hitting someone? Do tow-in surfers really need to have land-lubber legislation shoved in their face as the only way to counter-punch greed?
Rise of the wav...Tuesday, 14 Mar 2017 at 11:49am
Ok let's take a vote! in NSW surfing which towns/beaches are producing the best surfers or were do you most often see the best surfers. Illawarra,Sutherlandshire,The bra south,Northen beachs,Center coast,Newy, or the Bannana stretch who is surfing the best most constant in free surfs who is the most impressive????
PeckaTuesday, 14 Mar 2017 at 11:53am
The best surfers I know surf a variety of spots depending on the conditions of the day. They tend to not just stick to one spot. And I never hear them refer to themselves as ' local'.
Rise of the wav...Tuesday, 14 Mar 2017 at 12:06pm
Yep i'm going to say the Illawarra is producing the best all round surfers and some of the best free surfing going down in Australia.
chookTuesday, 14 Mar 2017 at 12:33pm
Illawarra has the best kneelos
savanovaTuesday, 14 Mar 2017 at 2:14pm
We also have some of the best leather life jacketed western sydney jetski jockies goin.
It's the equivalent to ping-pong/swimming in the Olympics it's just there for no reason? But PingPong is super cool though I can watch that:=)

Let's be honest, the only reasons for using a ski are either a. you're a pro and you're being filmed (safety and legal implications of being within exclusion zone of swimmers aside); b. its fucking humungous and noboday can get out anyway; or, c. it's shallow, heavy, and you'll probably eat shit on 99% of waves (in which case, you should probably surf more to your ability and stop taking up hospital beds that could be used for sick people). The rest are most definately dickheads who obviously don't give a shit about anyone else in the water. So my question is....why publish vids of dickheads? Just to start a conversation?
BeagleWednesday, 15 Mar 2017 at 9:31am
Yo Matson - you should do a straw poll on Swellnet Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) vs continuing to post junk vids of skis. I'd be willing to bet a cup of tea (based on the comments here) that the CSR angle would win every time.
thermalbenWednesday, 15 Mar 2017 at 9:43am
Isn't it a fair point that posting these videos raises awareness and thus promotes discussion?
Don't get me wrong. Personally, I'm not a fan of skis, and despise their use in comparitavely small beachbreak surf. I don't own one and don't tow surf with mates who do own 'em.
But to suggest that by Swellnet not posting these videos, somehow a change will occur - is a little naive.
BeagleWednesday, 15 Mar 2017 at 10:21am
Hey Ben, thanks for the clip and sorry got a bit carried away there in that last comment - this is exactly why I shouldn't type after too much coffee! I couldn't agree more.
I do disagree re. changing behaviour. Big business has been doing CSR for more than 15 years, shaping consumer behaviour and, vice versa - changing business practices (think about Australian resource companies slowly cleaning, literally, up their act in recent years).
Let's not kid around though, it is illegal and dangerous what these idiots do in crowded zones on the northern beaches, the GC, surf coast etc and I would imagine it would only take one particularly litigious asshole to sue for much more than the jet ski and trailer is worth.
thermalbenWednesday, 15 Mar 2017 at 10:32am
So, are you saying that if Swellnet didn't run this video (nor any other video with questionable jetski ethics), and that if other surfing websites and all social media channels followed suit, that said jetski operators would lose interest and paddle instead?
Aside from the impossible notion of competiting media entities having synchronous content strategies, I think that your suggestion is incredibly optimistic.
I don't think these guys are towing beachbreaks because of the media attention they get. I think they're lazy.
And yeah, I agree - it's dangerous and illegal.
prawnheadWednesday, 15 Mar 2017 at 2:03pm
Selfish, greedy and inconsiderate come to mind also ...
BeagleWednesday, 15 Mar 2017 at 11:09am
Ben - I'm simply saying it's more complex than you suggest, and that change in other contexts is always possible (if, sometimes time consuming and unlikely). I am not questioning your ethics, rather I believe SN to be on a much, much better footing in terms of its content than some of the lads magazines masquerading as content. We can agree to disagree on the possibility of change, but apart from that I'm signing up as a paid member because I respect what you do and won't be renewing other subscriptions. Keep charging!

Thanks mate, really appreciate the support.
curly2alexWednesday, 15 Mar 2017 at 1:37pm
From what I saw of the vid the ski was mainly for the young grommet to get into a couple for a photo oppourtunity.
Example A is Swellnets wave of the day picture of Matt Bemrose today. I believe this is the same wave at 3:10 in the video which was just a closeout, but the photo is great.
No harm = no foul.
But when someone eventually does get hit by a ski....................
Rise of the wav...Wednesday, 15 Mar 2017 at 3:17pm
Ok this comment is by no means a attack on the volunteer surf life savers and I appreciate there services and time! . But to be honest I have had more near miss and nearly been run over by operators of there rubber ducky squad than incidents with surfers doing step offs with jet skis.
Rise of the wav...Wednesday, 15 Mar 2017 at 7:05pm
And to be honest from a psychological view most of the time it come down to being jealous! There are spots like snapper where on a super sweep day we are all just wasting our time anyway burning our rotator cuff ligaments for 6hrs to get 5meters around the rock for a chance at 1wave.
If theirs no sweep then they should fuck off! At a mixed up beach break i don't care as most of the step offs happen out past the take off zone so unless there complete tools they shouldn't hit someone.
Now on a day like that if they wish to do step offs they should paddle back out so not to hurt or piss anyone off and also be aware of whose turn it is next.
I understand how annoying shifty wedge breaks can do your head in because sometimes the playing field is to big and you just watch epic waves unloading left and right of you.
It also shits me when someone gets pissed if your getting more waves than them even if your are taking your turn and not snaking to much.
TRY going to the pool or going for a walk to keep your cardio up! it's not my fault I train and get more waves because I'm fitter than you instead of drinking beer with the boys. So just to let you know the next time I paddle past you and you sulk I don't give a fuck! Why because I have put the time in and i deserve it more than you .
But I am a little curious to know the exact scenario that has you pissed of or are you just jealous about the waves you have seen being ridden around you that you wouldn't have got anyway.
I paddle always,I have never towed or stepped of I love paddling................
trevortubeWednesday, 15 Mar 2017 at 11:30pm
Jealousy. Are you for fukn real. Check out this grub with grom in tow @ 2min odd.
Sure it is sweet to beat the sweep, but they and you know the drill (or do you). Take your ticket and fall in line. As for snaking by two odd meters just to be inside "cause you can".
Thinking there would be more pissing and moaning from yourself being roasted by them actually.
