Trailer for Surfers: The Movie - video
Surfers: The Movie was a 1990 film that departed from the surf movie formula by running interviews with famous surfers rather than straight surf action. The surfers talked, gave lengthy and candid answers thereby putting their personality on show rather than their mere physical skills. Looking back it's possible to see it as a harbinger for what was to come, with punters expecting a bit more from their idols than a cheeky smile and killer re-entry. If they were gonna succeed they'd need charm - either naturally possessed or taught via media management.
Anyway, I'm just musing and it's not really warranted as this promo clip from Surfers has no interviews, just music and surfing. Still, the music is Jimi Hendrix and the surfing scenes will take you on a wild ride through the ages.

Some classic shots here ... RenoA's Pipeline tube and more !
Just fantastic Stu; when and where can I see the whole movie.
The old footage and the evolution were great - but I reckon Hendrix was THE best part.

"You'll never hear surf music again"
ps. love the proto DJ at 3:03!
@RobbyBobby,
Not too sure where you'd get the film. There's a version on YouTube but it includes a copyright infringement - a music track I presume - so YT has muted the sound.
Here are a few clips from it, the first is an interview with Miki Dora that became famous/infamous, plus the Pottz section:
Slater and Curren:
Owl Chapman:
Cheyne Horan's good vibrations:
Dora...what a classic.
Pottz...how time changes.
"...how time changes.."
Very diplomatic, CRG.
Hahaha....
Ok then...how does a Dora inspired anti-hero turn into a woeful corporate mouthpiece?
PS. Nice pics on the 10 channel...yew!!
Thanks for that Stu, watched them all and loved it. I hope to see the whole thing together; I'm on the hunt as soon as this swell is over.
Talk soon,
Cheers RobB
Loved that. Hendrix yeah.
For those interested look up Stylemasters 2008 DVD of '70s footage. Original soundtrack by Bluebird. Trailer on youtube is corny movie is very good. Lots of Lopez etc.
Hey guys (Stu)--hate to change the subject (not really)--but just read where Quicksilver has just changed it name to 'Boardrider's Inc.' Now i'm definetily no fan of the surf industry (what's left of it)--but with Surfing mag going under--Surf stich dead in the water--Surfing Life struggling--Billabong CEO going to jail for 7 years--all I can say at this point is--and another one--and another one--and another one-- and another one--"Bites the Dust"--can the WSL and others be far behind?
Owl : words to live by
That was awesome. Cool-as track and probably every notable surfer from my generation.
Thanks for putting this up.
Excellent, thanks for bringing back the good times Stu made me think kindly of surfing again instead of the rubbish going on out there these days. What a time in life. Jimi, a tragic loss to humanity, to think he could still be playing today, I'd go see that.
look, whatever people may well think of Dora (and David Rensin's book is really the benchmark) he was unique. This was one of his better interviews - laughed out loud.
yeah, the david rensin book on dora is superb, and so aptly titled -- " all for a few perfect waves".
i really lke dora's "surf in the morning, tennis in the afternoon" lifestyle.
