The House of Hot Stuff - video
Hot Stuff surfboards: The name is as much a part of the Gold Coast as MP, Rabbit, PT, or Kirra. This year the label chalks up forty years in business so Paul Hallas - longtime Hot Stuff owner - has created a documentary looking back upon their history.
Always occupied at the pointy end of design, Hot Stuff's back catalogue is comprised of classic single fins, tail whipping twinnies, and then onwards to thrusters. Oftentimes they incorporated singular elements such as channels - y'all all heard of Allan Byrne, right? - yet no matter the model each board had the Hot Stuff 'look': sharp, progressive, fast and, well...hot.
Fellas who've written their name on the stringer include the aforementioned Byrne, Gill Glover, Neal Purchase, John Mills, even Peter Drouyn, while the list of riders reads like Queensland royalty: Wayne Deane, PT, Rabbit, Kong, and on and on...
Here's the trailer to the forthcoming documentary 'The House of Hot Stuff'.

Gold stuff, Stuey.
Went in there a few weeks ago, only place on the coast where I could buy a pair of plain Black boardies, without all the crap logo's and shit on them;)
Had some nice brand new AB boards as well, not sure who was shaping them but they looked awesome, nice channels etc etc.
Good volume and width, pieces of art IMO;)
Cheers.
Not gold stuff, Welly. It's hot stuff.
The AB's were Byrning Spears, I presume? If so, it's Dale Wilson doing the shaping and you should ask Ben how they go, he got a new one, 6'8" six channel from memory, and took it over to Hawaii for a week. Got back just the other day.
I've got an AB-shaped Hot Stuff 5'10" six channel out in the shed somewhere. It's a classic mid-80s shape. Might clean the sucker up and take it for a ride this weekend.
Nice Stu.
You have some panache about you for sure. Thats not Pancake spelt wrong by the way.
Funny fuck.
Yeah I think you are right, Dale Wilson!
I thought the lady said at the time, when I was looking at them, she said it was AB's son?????
UUuuuummm.
They look unreal, might save up and get one;)
Cheers.
Dale Wilson was partners with AB in Byrning Spears when he died and learnt the craft from him.
Jamie Byrne is AB's son and also makes a nice channel, the ABC model (you can guess what it stands for).
Ian Byrne (his bro) makes great ones at Mt Woodgee too.
Cheers LD
Good Info;)
Gil Glover the hairdresser/ master shaper..
Fuck Tommy P's got a rough head ...How much were the boardies Welly?
$48, Rip Curl Mirage???????????
Compared to $147 down at BillaBong for the Wank wank, plastered, fluoro, crap, from old mate legend pro dude????
Sorry for being of topic here, but Udo!
What is up with the crap fashion at the moment???
That's a good price on the mirage. Is that like 40% off?
Cheap cheap like a parrot ;)
But black and no frills LD.
Hahaha, Tommy's head should be in the dictionary beside the definition of Aussie Old School!
Yes there were definitely a signature board of the goldy. I first noticed one , a supreme Classic the owner a guy called Ari , living at Supers - J bay. I believe he may have been Cheron Habibs partner , who lives right there at Supers lookout. Anyway Ari had this 7 ft something double wing pin it was a high line driver for those big days of Supers. Anyone who knows and has surfed J bay double overhead knows what you need to have there for those waves back then 85/86. Shaun T and all the locals surfed so much bigger boards back then and this Hot stuff jem was no exception. Obviously Bugs and the boys from Burleigh are al well acquainted with them. Carry on Hot stuff.
That'd be Ari Kraak, husband of Cheron, uncle to Twiggy Baker. A great moment unfolded at the 2013 Oakley Big Wave Awards when Twig won first prize for the biggest slab. While up on stage accepting his award, Twig took the opportunity to thank Allan Byrne on behalf of Ari for all the good boards he shaped him over the years.
So yeah, there was definitely a Hot Stuff/J'Bay connection.
Who woulda thought that Bugs would go for such a classic comb-over, or, comb-back as the case may be.
I couldn't pick Hallas in the video, he used to have really long hair in the 70's so maybe he's had a haircut!
Used to work in the next factory as them at Currumbin, I used to make furniture. I remember all the shapers and a glasser named John Allen? (JA). Hallas used to do Rembukan karate and some friends and I used to do Koyokushin karate (Billy Grant also did Kokushin) I also worked at Goodtime surfboards with Furry, MP, PT, Granty and the crew for a while.
Great to see Good Stuff has survived for so long - they always produced a quality product
Hot Stuff alright,
I remember the old Hot Stuff shop near Maccas on the GC Highway, Glen(Red) ran it with help from Jodie when I ordered my Alan Byrne 6 channel rounded pin in 1981? Of course I got the WB logo on it and a Hot Stuff T shirt too. At the time it was the most expensive board money could buy, worth every cent. Glen would do repairs out the side, glassed on fins took a beating on the Burleigh rock offs. The Hot Stuff surf team was hot too, Rabbit, Kong and Daryl "deep" Parkinson, were stand outs, but it was AB who lead the way for goofy footers, surfing Burleigh Point on his backhand, many a surfer was inspired by these guys and some still are........Dave Bowie is
Great to hear some awesome, old school replies.
Thanks Dave_Wait for it and saurusv1 ;)
Really hyping me up to get a proto of an AB, from there, they look awesome.
I know Udo, you had me up a few weeks ago! on Gumtree?
But I always like to ride a brand new one;)
Ben if you're reading this?
Did you get one from HotStuff!, off the shelf or custom?
I bet the locals in Hawaii, would've looked twice, when you walked down the beach with it?
My bro had a sweet little Hot Stuff years ago, may have even been his first decent board. Can't remember if it was a twin or a thruster.
Ash, if you read this, can you remember who shaped it?
Kong's section from 'The Performers', riding AB Hot Suffs.
Good stuff.
Hi been searching around for this movie but coming up with nothing. Does anyone know where you can get a full length copy from or who to contact or wether it was ever released?
