King of the north - video
A fortnight ago Swellnet ran a video titled 'Queen of the south' that featured a beautiful Cornish wave peeling off in all her frigid glory, yet the readers assured us that Cornwall is warm...at least relatively speaking.
"Cornwall never gets that cold," said Britabroad. While Gasman added, "Cold? You've got to be kidding me. Cornwall is practically balmy compared to a lot of other surf spots in the UK."
And you can see where Monty Python got their Four Yorkeshiremen sketch from...
So in the spirit of one-upmanship here's the sequel to the 'Queen of the south', imaginatively titled 'King of the north'.
Dive in, and as they say in Scotland: Landing gear up.

great waves / clip
Great clip. Almost makes me want to move to Scotland......... Almost.
niiiiiiiiice. Got to be on the money to make the call for such a long drive to this lovely piece of wavescape. It's not THAT cold. Just pretend you didn't have fingers and toes to start with.
....and a deep voice.
Cool vid.
lmao
true that.
been a few pumping sessions in deep cold here, zen. when you have to trudge through a snow-laden paddock for half an hour to get to the smokin' waves it keeps the place uncrowded. woohoo.
I've been reading that drop-in thread Clif, makes me laugh and cry at the same time. Glad I lived on the Goldy when you could still actually get an unmolested wave on the points.
We've had a shocker of a winter here though, long time between swells here and the snowboarding (with the exception of a Hokkaido trip) has been less than inspiring. But there's been enough to keep us occupied.
I hate all that rubber but when it all comes together and only a handful of blokes are taking turns with more waves coming through than you can catch, that cold cold water and air aint so bad.
I'm loving your sunny disposition Clif, that's the ticket:)
Good to see a Neil Purchase jnr Duo has landed in Thurso - dylanfm instagram
Picked it up 2nd hand a month or so ago, stoked. Lovely board in mint condition.
This video pretty accurately sums up why I moved here from the central coast. Had some great waves on that swell.
Thurso East is one of the great surfing experiences. Have made a few trips over the years and apart from a huge variety of great waves in the area the locals are just great people. Thankfully it is so cold so it tends to keep the crowds down even when it's firing. Great memories
One to tick off, looks so fun!
Loved the clip real old school surf vid. Just checked where Thurso was FMD it is level with Gotenburg in Sweden. Geez must be a bees doodle from the arctic circle. That water temp must be around 6 or 8 degrees. I can't even fathom surfing when it is that cold and I am from Victoria. Makes mid winter here in comparison like the tropics.
Gulf stream.
UK is much milder than it's latitude would suggest due to warm ocean current.
Winter 6-8 deg C
Summer 11-14 deg C
and toss in some wind chill.
MIght take a pass on that one.
Awesome.
We've got palm trees on the west coast of Scotland, rarely get a frost, it's basically tropical ;) And all of those islands copping Atlantic swell. Anyway it's nearly spring, time to peel a layer off.
We reached 6°C 43°F today. Getting warmer!
Nice vid. Now that's a bit colder!
