Something to be said about surfing in water that cold. You certainly earn your waves.
Yes, and why are cold waves scarier? What's that all about?
I reckon getting flogged in seriously cold water is way worse than when it's warm. It just takes away your energy so much quicker.
too true zen and exactly reason why i have a quiver of winter wetties
And the panic
Don't flush! Don't flush!
just me or dose the water look the exact same as slaters pool? maybe something going on with the brown water.
P.S how good were the near decapitations!
Brown sand = brown water.
I've surfed extensively through Scotland and Ireland in winter. Snowing etc. Water temps at maybe 4-5 degrees. Have also surfed extensively through tropical climates. Definitely saps your energy more in cold water. Just staying warm even when you don't cop a flogging is hard work!
and is it just my imagination or is cold water 'harder' ? I reckon it slaps you harder and you dont penetrate it as easy as warm water. Does anyone know the science behind that? Either way, I will never complain about 16 deg' celcius water again.
Heat is energy. The warmer the water, the more thermally agitated are the water molecules. This means the water molecules in warmer water tend to further apart and the forces of attraction between the molecules is lessened. Warm water is slightly less dense that cold water and, perhaps more significant, the surface tension is less.
Yep, cold water slaps harder than warm water.
Cool... thanks.
As I like to say, you can't spell 'Molecules' without 'Muscle' - which is why more molecules tends to slap you harder,

Don't want that one showing up in any personal training manuals out west in SA.
