Peahi gets the green light
Thursday, December 3, 2015- The WSL Big Wave Tour is on a green alert for its second event of the season, the Pe'ahi Challenge. This will be the first time a WSL Big Wave event will be run at the famous wave located off the coast of Maui, which will air live Sunday, December 6, starting at 7:30 a.m. local time.
"The first-ever big wave paddle-in event at Pe'ahi is about to become quite possibly the most impactful contest ever to be held in the short history of our sport," said Big Wave Tour VP Gary Linden. "It has been a very long road with a lot of curves along the way but patience is golden and I am sure we will be rewarded for the wait."
Big Wave Tour commissioner Peter Mel said, "Not only will this be a historic event at one of the most renowned waves on the planet, but we're excited to be broadcasting it live for surf fans around the world. The buoy readings are really strong and look to be well above the minimum requirement for a Big Wave event in the 35-to-45 foot range."

Sounds like they are confident it is on? Whats you call Ben?
Haven't had a chance to look at the charts but Craig has been keeping a close eye on it.
I think 35-45ft face is a little ambitious.
I'm expecting 15-18ft on the North Shore and probably 15-20ft at Pe'ahi so 30-40ft faces.
The best thing about this swell is the projection of the storm south-east towards Hawaii, helping increase the size and consistency.
NE swell direction? Think north actually favours this one??
South-east track will equal NNW swell.
Cliff Access to watch the contest unfold may be tough, anyone been out there?
Would be worth watching if you could get a spot !!
The road out there used to be pretty rough, Should be an interesting contest.
Any person, Man Or woman paddling out from the beach to surf that wave is very brave.
I have an ol friend of mine who paddled it , in 2000/2001? he is a smart, respectable person. Not to sure what he was thinking though lol........
What are the conditions looking like for comp windwise ,Is it a bit cross shore or no ? Is swell direction optimum ? I know I can read the forecast but that doesn't answer my qs without the experience to know
wind looks good, although a little gusty (when is it not windy on maui.....) swell direction looks pretty good also.
Go Albee!!!!!!!!!
LD can u tell me the best angle of swell for jaws and then the angle of this one coming sun ? Is it spot on or a bit to the nth ? Etc..?
caml, i'm no expert, i have heard that anything n to n/e is optimal, this size and nnw is still very good (may be even better for paddling) opinions do vary. They also say the more west the more the left comes into play.
Best of luck to all involved in the contest, can not wait......Go Albee.
Slaters in the comp .
What are the waves gunna be like ?
Who's in the event ?
Cmon caml you should know...be fuckn radical this event..jaws is the high performance arena of big wave surfing..hope the stream is on..woohoo
Barley good to see you back . Well I finally got time to recheck the forecast for jaws mavs & todos . And now will check swellnets swell angles . There's been waves so didn't fully scope it barls . Theres so much excitement about the event at peahi that I wanted to be in the know .so I really want to know about the swell direction ....
SN has it at 329-330 degrees .
Stu are you doing analytics???
This is the real one to see if the BWWT with King Kelly can really drive an audience for the WSL.
But is he in it Mick? He aint in the heat draw.
you are right. no show at eddie ceremony. Twiggy banned from Mavericks too.
It's 5:30pm in Hawaii buoy 51101 NW of Oahu reading 18 feet at 17 seconds direction 324 degrees
LDean who you trying to fool with the noreast swell call for jaws ! Swells already arriving bigger than expected apparently !
trying to fool ? i think it likes any north swell, nnw / n / nne. i think that more than anything i am exited for the local surfers in the area to showcase their talent and also showcase the amazing equipment which is designed/built right there in haiku.
Sorry didn't mean to offend . Surfline says nnw is best so you were just about correct . I didn't know that a nne is ok too so I will take your word for it . Im just tryna find out & was hoping to find out with someone else's help on this forum .
if you can sit through this he explains the angle, @2:50 .
20@17 ! Mick what's up with the direction is it primo or a bit nth ?
No public access to the event cliff edge is private property ...want to watch it ...WSL site only..Jaws facebook page.
Ha ha ha...nice bluff by the WSL.
I don't know Caml, but I remember one your mates knows the best stats, he did on a previous thread. That storm surf link http://www.stormsurfing.com/cgi/display.cgi?a=npac_per has it peaking 12am and then dropping, not sure on accuracy though which is what surfline said
and surfline http://www.worldsurfleague.com/posts/164280/surfline-forecast-peahi-chal...
has it all the purple really big stuff going to Northern California
SN is 4.4m at 16.8 seconds for 6am tomorrow for peahi. These winds are a problem 13knots forecasted
Mick yeah thats rich in kauai who sometimes contributes but it not a secret . If ben or Craig were here they would tell us . Surf line spot check will have it . Kevin wallis on your link says nw , doesn't matter . Sn is skeleton crew this wknd . Much more info on insty !
how did K Rothman get in?
Maybe Eddie R said Koa's in .
Natxo will go hard.
Trying to find the lineup when it was first announced.....Jamie Sterling is a also a notable admission.
Those who closely missed out on a jersey are bummed ?
Buoy data looks amazing at the moment - the 51101 buoy (520km NW of Oahu; 710km NW of Maui) was recording 20ft at 17 seconds (NW) around 3pm local time.
However, it seems to have dropped quite a bit since then (15ft at 16 seconds at 7pm local) - and although there's roughly eleven hours travel time to the North Shore and fifteen hours to Jaws, this means that the swell will probably peak around 6-7am tomorrow.
I hope they can kick off things as soon as the sun rises, because based on current data it's going to drop steadily from mid-morning onwards.
Perfect waves in the night ! Surfline spot check for jaws says nnw swell is best . I couldn't access the article in full details unfortunately . The infos there .
Night surf ?...... I bet MV's been training for it .
Plenty of Hercules on that region for him to jump out of aswell ....... Yyyyyyyeeeeeeewwwwww !
No Aussies ? Why ?
What up with jeff rowley ?
M M is alternate , how many aussie surf good enough at the break to make the cut ? Even danilo couto missed out
Big Ben PitMove !
Yep that's right udo . JMitcho probably does good too . Hippo , dingo , MM , visser would go too
Looked at jaws on navionix & google . Seems like the reef would favor n & ne , but in the book laird Hamilton I vaguely remember they said north swells were a bit off the favored nw direction . The bathymetry looks as if swell might refract to the nth even if it was nw . Didn't laird go to egypts when the swell went too far nth ? U can't believe all the stuff , unless they're qualified to. I could be wrong that's why I hoped for some info ...
danilocouto11 instagram : not a happy chap - WSL used a pic of him to promote the event ......but he didn't get an invite.......pitmove,Dorian Slater and many more comment.
There's a lot of hoohah about danilos missing invite .
I've been thinking about this one though ; A photo of me was used to promote the margs pro this year and I didn't get an invite .
And I didn't expect one ! Haha . Funny tho the stir up over danilos omission
So will the Eddie run off this swell?
Is it on later tonight broadcast via wsl website ?
Its on. Couple waves ridden in warmup. Wave faces on set waves 35+. Hopefully holds for morning.
looks like fuckin chaos!! ski's choppers, wind..heavy!!
MM separated shoulder Dorian Ian Walsh goin crazy!!
Slater couldn't make it ? he's obviously in Hawaii wonder what his reason was ?
Swell direction was perfect for the outside bombs according to a interview with greg long .
Was great watching. How was Layer nailing thise drops on an 8'8. Definitely the outside bombs in morning ala dorian and matthews and greg long.Forecast absolutely bang on. That buoy 51101 reading 20 feet then 17 feet then 12 feet at 4 hourly intervals gave the prognosis. Watching in slowmo HD is crazy good. The minute adjustments like putting your inside rail into the wind to allow for the wind and then re-engaging is a staggering skill. Final had a good 30minutes of no waves with restart and then no one really rode an outside bomb.
I turned it on let it buffer it up and slowly watched it through the day. Got slow internet here and you could fast forward Turpel and Pottz murdering the booth.
Great having Dave Kalama on the desk. Wonder what Laird thinks of all this?
Caml was Jamie Mitchell still injured from that session at cow?
Also Roman Navarro is 8th on the tour. Was he injured too?
Jamie is charging again mick
Bielman suggesting marks wave biggest ever paddle wave
Mark's wave was one of the craziest things I've seen. Mid-air disconnection, gathered it while going mack speed and kept the nose out as well.
Insane!
The speed he had going down the face of that thing was mind blowing! Amazing effort
Re swell direction, I've heard it has to be north enough to not be shadowed by the other Hawaiian islands to the west, but not too north as it won't bowl in on itself as well.
MM's early morning drop:
Woke up lazily on sunday morning. Had breakfast, hung out with the family. Decided to turn on the contest, this was the first wave i watched. Bonkers!!!!!
nuts.
Wasn't it as obvious as balls on a dog that the Maui locals and those who had put the time in at Jaws were at a massive advantage.
Craig surely you can do better than that with the degrees ! Jokin,Doesn't matter anyway ) . MM really took the bull by the horns there , that's how you get a ticket into these events . His board looked short too . Fr76 to me it didn't seem to be the local knowledge of the break as much that helped so much , more like the local boys spirit to own it that was higher . Gabriel v first ever time there & made final ) there might have even been some Hawaiian muscle saying who was allowed to paddle deep etc .
True, just seemed to me like the knowledge and competency of Walsh, Dorian, Albee, Billy K was superior to most others, way superior.
But then you have Greg Long who has put in heaps of time out there and Villaran the rookie who did well.
You'd have to say the Maui boys were a cut above though.
Get a tingle in the loins Caml to be part of it?
I'm not disagreeing with you fr , obviously the locals had the experience . I wasn't sure that greg has many paddle seshs there , hes not there every swell . Even some of the regulars didn't catch many waves or took beatings . didn't get a tingle no .
Er edit here greg only needs a cupla surfs at any xxl wave & he has it sussed especially rights forehanding . Certainty like to see more of greg at jaws
Those conditions at Peahi were tough to surf. Maui guys are out there on every opportunity. Interesting 3 guys didn't catch jack in the final. Dorian didn't even catch a wave in 1hour 15mins. It does make you think about those days when its big and too windy and just flag it. Certainly on the East Coast there's only a few days a year at Longy Qcliff bombies 10 feet and they are never perfect so maybe you just got to get out there.
Any update on Mark Mathews....wtf is separated shoulder is it separated from his body, dislocated or broken??
Mark Mathews on his instagram said his shoulder was dislocated and fractured and, of course, he is pleased it wasn't worse.
Wally, wonder if he has fractured his deltoid tuberosity. Common impact injury when arm is in full extension.
He looked happy afterwards no pain even . Media propaganda headlined it but hes ok crikeys they're all laughing about it looking at the replay with dingo
Seems marks injury much the same as Jamie mitchels at cow bomb earlier this year. Wonder if the inflation jackets have anything to do with it? Good to see kemper come up and wave of ski without having set of his inflation everytime, seems most guys did. Carlos burles sucked over the falls was wild and def worth the cannister. Great day of surfing
I don't think the vests have much to do with the injuries mh . Did Kemper really surf deflated vest ?
Not sure about other floatation but no cannister bubble on his back when he came up after the ones he didnt make from what I saw. Got his own board and paddled out to channel too rather than immediate rescue on at least one occasion . Many of the other surfers had set off inflation after each wave they didnt make and went on ski to let them down, i think i saw Shane had kept his fully blown up for most of the last heat.
Mike I saw the guys waving the ski off & paddling back out , obviously a standard set in their own mind like traditionalists . They are the fittest paddlers in the game & they are in a paddle contest . They would only take a ski if necessary , they would know better than to make ski wake & not the respectful comradeship between these guys by paddling back out rather than jumping the queue from ski . Also I would bet on in that they all have floatation , the whole time & if theyre being tumbled they pull the cord for the super blowup . Nobody at all is without floatation it is the rules .
