Carissa Moore Claims 2015 WSL Title and Wins Target Maui Pro

HONOLUA BAY, Maui/Hawaii (Wednesday, December 2, 2015)

The Target Maui Pro came to a phenomenal close today with the world-class Honolua Bay delivering perfect four-to-six foot (1.5 - 2 metre) plus waves to close the season for the world’s best surfers.

Action was incendiary from the start with the 2015 WSL Title clinched for now three-time World Champion Carissa Moore (HAW) as underdog Coco Ho (HAW) eliminated title challenger Courtney Conlogue (USA) in this morning’s Round 4 heat.

Moore’s historic day didn’t end there as the Hawaiian powerhouse took full advantage of pristine conditions and building swell, rampaging her way through the rounds and into the Final where she posted an astonishing 19.50 (out of a possible 20) - earning a unanimous 10 (out of a possible 10) - to claim her second, consecutive Target Maui Pro victory.

“You can never feel it til the end and this is definitely the moment,” Moore said. “Courtney’s been surfing so well, she’s worked so hard and I never counted her out for a moment. It’s crazy being in a title race. There’s so many ups and downs and just to keep that confidence up when you lose. I’ve enjoyed the whole ride and to see it pay off, it was just nice to finish off the season strong last year here. It’s a place I love to surf and it just lit a fire underneath me and got me excited for this season. That was the biggest barrel I’ve ever gotten in competition and I’m just so thankful for everything.”

I really enjoy watching the women.

Now, onto the surfing. Carissa really Gary'd her way through that barrel and I admired how the women were really taking a leaf out of Gary's book in how they were throwing the rigs into some of those hacks.

Carissa is about 10 levels above the rest. Sally seems more focused on getting her face on tv than winning a world title. To win you have to make it your complete focus.

The thing is her earning potential would sky rocket if she was a world champion. At the moment she seems to be 2nd place Sally.

Congrats to Carissa, well deserved and the women's surfing is just getting better.

But how do you give a 10 to a wave where she blows the final manoeuvre?

What do they give Sally if she gets as good a wave, does the same moves and nails the final drop instead of bogging a rail and falling off? An 11?

And why does the swellnet site show manoeuvre as the incorrect spelling, and swellnet also.

And why are bananas bent?

These and other questions.

I agree , she got a really nice, but short barrel and fell off on the final turn. No way should that have been a perfect score in surf that perfect.

Thanks Steve, I don't think it helps the girls or the authenticity of the sport by giving 10's where even a nonce like me can see they could have done better on that wave.

Has that horrible feel of a commercial outcome, even though the end result wasn't affected. If the advertisers, or the hypesters, are calling the scores, then the sport is gone.

With respect to Potts who called it a 10 before the judges. Perhaps just caught up in the excitement. I can listen to Potts commentary all day, and he is more likely than any to impart something that I will learn from. So no disrespect, Mr Potter, Sir.

Very strange decision, seems like a complete contradiction - 10/10 for something that's so clearly not perfect.
By the way Batfink, do you know what "nonce" means in Brit slang?? Don't be calling yourself a nonce, mate, maybe a dunce?!

Yes, why do the judges seem hell bent on giving a 10, which is supposed to be for a perfect ride, on waves where the rider has fallen.
Would they give one in ice skating after some great twists and twirls but the skater lands on their arse with the last jump? Or a freestyle skier stacks it after a perfect triple somersault ?
Not likley!
So please WSL give the surfers the credit that they are due rather than having to give a 10 for a less than perfect wave.
Carissa and Sally did rip the bag out of some very nice looking waves and I'd love to be able to surf it with only one other out but those are only the thing of dreams !

They should have a mens event there. Ditch Brazil or Portugal.

Such a beautiful hypo wave and incredibly photogenic.

Agreed, not a 10 but she surfed it very well.

Sally then got a wave slightly smaller but longer more technical barrel made a clean exit and completed the wave with man hack and gets a 9.3 didn't make sense to me

Watched the highlights last night and couldnt wait to get on this forum today to see if was only me that thought the judges had their heads up their arse.
You CANNOT score a perfect 10 if you fall on the last turn.
Not saying Carissa didnt deserve the win but the discrepancy between the girls tube rides makes a mockery of the whole thing.
