Mick Fanning solo session somewhere in Peniche - video
While Supertubos wobbles and lurches, this down the line right pumps with a crowd of one. It also allows a great cliff top angle of Mick's karate chop top turn.
If only the surf was like this during his Round 3 heat at Supertubos.

Poetry
The world does not need more poetry.
Perhaps it has all been done
from me to you Neville:
I met her as a blossom on a stem
Before she ever breathed, and in that dream
The mind remembers from a deeper sleep:
Eye learned from eye, cold lip from sensual lip.
My dream divided on a point of fire;
Light hardened on the water where we were;
A bird sang low; the moonlight sifted in;
The water rippled, and she rippled on.
She came toward me in the flowing air,
A shape of change, encircled by its fire.
I watched her there, between me and the moon;
The bushes and the stones danced on and on;
I touched her shadow when the light delayed;
I turned my face away, and yet she stayed.
A bird sang from the center of a tree;
She loved the wind because the wind loved me.
(Theodore Roethke)
Speed, style, flow. Love that high 'behind the peak' angle - reminds me of viewing on most east coast right hand point breaks.
Why is there no-one out!!
Perhaps ripcurl paid them all to get/stay out of the water?
Surely you're not serious Don. Just for one wide cutaway shot showing the empty lineup? There could have been fifty blokes in the water and I'm sure Mick woudn't have had much trouble getting waves.
Because this likely happened before 10am... Europeans, and especially Portuguese, are not into the dawn patrol thing.
Plus it probably happened in a less famous spot and Portuguese love herd surfing, despite the absence of men in grey suits.
I known these things about the Portuguese, I'm one of them... I love Snapper at 11am!
All true daboots! Exactly my experience of surfing in Portugal. Well, except the snapper thing, I'll take ya word for it, but wouldn't surprise me.
Also can add (most) reef/point breaks, particularly if you have to walk at all and/or rock off/on, those guys just love their beachies with a car park straight in front! The spot Mick is surfing has a bit of a nasty rock off from memory so that'd keep the (local) punters off it for sure.
Awesome to see Gabs doing air reverses in 2 ft crap, when there is this quality of wave available, and this amount of swell hitting some spots.
WSL is a joke
Everyone knows who the best surfer in the world is. Whether WSL agrees is moot I reckon. World Champ pffft... No one gives a shit about WSL. A shit brand (and shit brand name too) with the worse organisers. It's pretty obvious what's going on though. Brazil and Europe have a MUCH larger viewer base than US or Australia.... you see where this is going right? We need a Kerry Packer type to come and sort out these knuckleheads. Oh... and here are some of my commentator gripes: First off, hyperbole. I think we're all tired of that shit. Joel Turpel is a whiny bitch who love Brazzo nutsack. Pottz repeats the same 5 words indefinitely. Who the fuck is that bald, hatted fucker? The femnale interviewer?? Omfg. Maybe she appeals to 15 year olds. LoL. The Aussie does alright. I forgot his name.... And maybe that's the point. Summing up: Everyone USED TO love Kieren Perrow....
Who is the best surfer in the world??? Who I say would be different to who you say.
Its all based on individual opinion.
In my individual opinion the best surfer in the world isn't apart of the tour, and never ever will be. I sit their waiting for him to drop 3-4 minute clips once or twice a month, he doesn't even want to do this, but he has to to satisfy his sponsors who pay him to surf for a living. This bloke wouldn't cope with a 9-5 regular joe job.
Uhhh, would that be the same guy who finished 25th, 73rd, 13th, 25th, 25th, 25th, 9th, 13th, 25th and 13th at his last 10 comps? :D
If your talking about Dane.
No, definitely not. Definitely definitely not
Hahaha fair enough.
Ah yeah fair enough. Its hard to quantify "best surfer" anyway, being a judgment sport and all.
Mick and Gabs, maybe throw ADS in there just have the heat strategy factor and consistency down pat and thats the difference between them and say JJF and co.
Anyway, I'd rather watch Marzo throwing his tail anyday than some Brazzo's speed pumping into an air reverse to a claim for a score. Yawn.
Amen!
As Mick attracts sharks like bees to honey.......
Yeah I know that most posters/readers here aren't too supportive of WSL or comps for that matter. And I guess the heat MF lost yesterday to Morais just adds to the disdain. I've looked at their waves on the heat analyser over and over and it seems to me that Mick's 8.4 is better than Morais's 9.13, as is MF's 6 better than Morais's 6.9. No disrespect to Morais, but his turns did not match Mick's for flow, style or flow. Nor were M's turns as critical. mmm
Yep couldn't agree more. A mate and I came to the exact same conclusion last night after re-watching the turns a bunch of times (and that mate was not Kelly Slater in the locker room post-heat conversation). I am normally pretty sympathetic to the judges but this was a major blunder in a very important heat for Mick...
While Morais surfed well, compared to Mick he was wobbly, caught rails and sat on his arse to complete turns.
Agreed PD And Monk however I think in this case (in the judges eyes for this heat anyway) size of wave came into play and how clean the faces were,whereas in any other heat size of wave didn't matter if you happen to do an air reverse off it!
Few to many judging discrepancies for my liking. Italo getting a 8.67 for a wonky air reverse and landing on his backside,come on.....I know they were different heats but compare Morias 9.13 to Jeremys 9.43 and ask yourself was that only .3 of a point better? or was Morias massively overscored?
Morias was almost certainly overscored for that 9. My theory is that it was due mostly to the crowd. There was a big speed run into the turn which built up a huge amount of anticipation, then he nailed a very good turn and the crowd went absolutely mental, and I think the judges got a bit carried away with the vibe of the situation. But when you look at the turn again you will see that it is a very good turn, but not an excellent one. It does not compare to similar manoeuvres that Jordy, JJF, Slats or the Spartan do on that type of section where they absolutely blow the wave apart. I am relatively certain that the home-town advantage got him through that one. Full credit to Morias though - he did surf a great heat, and almost beat the world champ!
And, despite Mick being on the end of dodgy judging, it could equally be argued that in the bigger scheme of things Mick has had a fair share of calls go his way.
Mick gets way too repetitive with his turns. They're the most precise and flowy turns on tour, no doubt, but when 90% of your open face turns look almost exactly the same and then always the same snap when finishing the wave then people and judges tend to stop appreciating them so much...
The same reason Orlando got bored of Miranda...
There's not much I love more than a good right hand solo session; just Gary alone with his thoughts and the great outdoors. Definitely a little extra kick when you know someone's filming it too.
Fanning might've been alone in the water but he had plenty of voyeurs (eh, Gary?). Some of the waves in the above vid show up here from a few different angles.
Multiple slient observers! Wow Stunet, that sort of treatment doesn't come cheap. Nice to know that Mick devotes his finances to some of the same things that I do.
There are a lot of haterz around, but in my eyes Mick really knows how to knock the top off it with clinical style.
"best surfer in the world" ... mmm, how do you get to watch those you would consider the best? Surfing a whole wave, or from video clips highlighting their best?
Watching Marzo's clips, you see whole waves surfed, rather than just end punts or 1 move like most freesurfer clips.
I consider him the best surfer as he does shit no-one else can super consistently. Can ride a barrel as well.
Oh, and what the fuck did ya all think was going to happen to the 'world tour' when a media company took control of it? They're not doing a bad effort of trying to write the script for a pipe showdown ...
I gave up watching ages ago, but just looked at the heat were MF lost ... Listen to the commentators gives it away. That heat mick lost, listen to the commentators, they start out saying the 8.4 will be up there with the 9.13, but then must get the word to down play it (way before the 8.40 score drops) and start back peddling ...
