Kelly Slater spruiking for wooden boards - video
Decked in OK duds Kelly Slater fronts the camera to...erm, kickstart the fundraising for a project he's interested in.
In 1964 a tree fell in the Kings Canyon National Park and though there was no-one around the sound of it falling was heard 30 miles away. The tree was 282 feet tall, had bark three feet thick, its diameter was 27 feet, while its circumference was 95 feet at its thickest part. It was estimated at 3,000 years old.
Wood from that tree is now being used to make a range of boards by master wooden board builder Larry Fuller. Fuller's mission is to "unite the lineage of the riders and designers throughout surfing's history."
It's a large undertaking and costly too, hence the Kickstarter project and Kelly's on-camera appeal.

Back to the roots....
penmister, more likely trunks and branches.
Great idea, the tree will live on as works of art.Beautiful timber.
Takes a long time, but very rewarding. A post-oil surfing would see you stick with your favourite board for much longer!
Imagine then doing it with hand planes...
Back too the roots back too the roots..
Kelly is branching out.
Ha, ha, ha!!!....'branching out'......Get it?!!?
Errrr, yeah sorry, I'll just go out that side door.
But seriously, timber surfboards?
What is Kelly trying to start? A splinter movement?
He's going against the grain.
