The Habitat, Episode 3 // Albee and Jaws - video
Last season at Jaws Albee Layer deepened his relationship with the west bowl. Riding shorter boards and positioning himself inside the main takeoff, Layer concentrated on those swinging, mutant bowls.
This is Episode 3 in a series compiled by the Take Shelter mob.

thats' got to be the pinnace of big wave paddle in surfing doesn't it?
Yep, I reckon it is. Interesting that most guys went longer and thicker, I think 10'6" x 3 inches is what most Maui crew settled on, but Albee brought his boards down to around 9 foot. And when most guys sat outside waiting for the XXXL beasts he sat inside and went the smaller, hollower ones.
He had a different vision for surfing Jaws, got the equipment made, and surfs it in his own inimitable way. Who the fuck can imitate that?
Stu & fr 76 . 3.9 thick , 4 for normal . How can it be the pinnacle if you don't ride sets ! There's always been a guy on a smaller board sneaking insiders & theres always been the biggest wave of the day . Nothing new
Ha ha...are you calling Albee a shorebreak king?
Barrels, Camel. 20 foot barrels!
No not criticizing albee at all . Just the comment that it was the pinnacle . I pointed out shano getting the sets would say be da pinnacle
Crowd screaming the sound of a 100 motor drives clicking and drawing lines and pulling in on a board that's at least a 1ft shorter than the norm for out there....fucking unreal.
Excellent video!
Incredible and we got to see the aftermath unlike the recent Chopes vid. I agree with FR that is really pushing paddle in surfing. Those leg ropes must be 25mm thick as they all bail in gigantic surf and live to fight the next set. I wonder what the deal is with the jet ski are they for everybody or do have a mate in the water? Sensational footage and how crowded was it? Geez if it is crowded out there I wonder what the the other breaks are like? So many questions look forward to being enlightened.
unbelievable. I love the comment about being at the mercy of the ocean. ...the level of belief and trust required to paddle into that stuff....shit....its admirable even when you consider their physical condition is sky high. Just pure commitment in every way.
can we see the videos of him getting caught inside?
Ski assisted richie ?
Jeez hows the takeoff at 3.00. How did he stick that? Great stuff.
setting rail from the lip....... so sick
These guys are incredible. The committment required - mental and physical - is beyond anything I can imagine.
Totally agree.
Really nicely produced little video too. I'm glad a little artistry has entered the surf video genre. It's a far cry from the cheap punk-drenched, rough-cut, throw-in-a-few-sneaky-titty-shots, mail order VHS's of my youth. Happy memories, to be sure, but I don't miss them.
A fantastic clip alright! Beautiful in many respects.
The fact he sits on the inside is even crazier in a way, knowing you'll definitely wear some bombs on the head. The mental game is huge........
