Inside The Barrel - Video
It used to be enough for surfers to film themselves while holding a GoPro. Not anymore, photographers are slowly making their way back into the picture, filming the surfer from behind as they pull into the barrel.
Here's the latest - and the best - example of behind-the-rider filming we've seen. Video shot in France recently.

There's a bit at the end of one of the John John vids with some GoPro-following footage at Backdoor.
See what happens if you paddle out with a Gopro stuck on your head?
Get dropped in on every wave
At least they let him get one to himself at the end.
You beat me to it gannet:)
Cool perspective but unless he's a great mate, that view from in the barrrel would piss most people right off.
Agree, don't get anywhere near barrelled enough to try and film someone in front of me getting barrelled!
Comment from our Facebook page: "Bloody hell what's the camera guy's day job - proctologist?"
Photographers are probing the innermost limits, they're also using new tech to source unique angles. Reckon we'll see a lot more of this in the future:
TBH, I've been surprised by the relatively slow uptake. Thought this sort of thing would have exploded this year.
Amazingly, or perhaps not, it's illegal to use them commercially (for photography) in the US. The fellow who shot the footage above admitted that he didn't know what the regulations where and was waiting for someone to pull him up.
It's a huge grey area and the US FAA are gonna have to do something about it quick smart. Same with Australian aviation agaencies.
ahh ok. i wasn't aware of that. i had the feeling that regulatory agencies were still playing catch up. in any case, it probably explains the relatively slow uptake.
Oh no, they are playing catch up. The current US legislation (as far as I can gather) is a hangover from a past law protecting individual privacy, and it doesn't take into account the proliferation of quadcopters. Hence, many don't quite know where they stand in regards to the law. However, I get the feeling new laws will be enacted soon.
I saw something on Landline a little while ago, and in Australia, animal protection groups (I think it was PETA) are using them to film over farmers properties to get footage for prosecution in courts. Apparently it is all legit and legal.
"TGR"s new toy, instead of spending thousands of dollars on filming out of a helicopter, check the footage out from the "Golden Gate Bridge" to "Alcatraz" at night.
As mentioned in this thread about legalities, they obviously pulled it off.
