The issue I have MC, is that if you don’t like someone for whatever reason, you play king, court, judge, jury and executioner. Forget the fact that we see or hear of someone charging big waves, you have to dig up a dirt file and put it out there for all to see. "They did this and they did that, I will let everyone on the rock know about them, I know such and such, what they did is illegal, blah, blah, blah. I’m such a fucken angel because I have no skeletons from my past". I bet there are plenty out there that could air some dirt files on you and I know of a few from second hand and first hand experience.

Like I said, I don’t know the guy and have never met him. I don’t even know of the exact location of ‘the bombie’, but this guy has quite obviously got the desire, determination and the balls, for whatever reason, to fucken GO. That bomb at Jaws was commitment. Those waves at ‘the bombie’ were no more or less commitment. Him being out there and paddling into those waves is more than what 90% of surfers in the world would do. I don’t give a shit what his reasons are.

Its a pretty special feeling having a surf in world class waves then getting to the beach and taking ya wetty off and walking in the nude to ya car ,the windows open and keys in ignicion. Its great & theres also great times when ya share good surf with famous surfers & photografers . Some ppl like to keep these things quiet & sacred,can u blame them? Its just a surf u had &the difference u can make with one bit of exposure is huge. I love seeing waves exposed so I know about them but it maybe that a local guy whos a psycotic nutter doesnt like me coming to surf. southey, I'm sure Rowley surfs plenty when the cameras aren't around. For me, this sorta stuff and his Jaws and Mav's stuff, is worthy of documentation.

I haven't seen or spoken to Jeff for what must be the best part of 15 years. In retrospect he always was driven, even as a younger fella, now that I think about. Regardless, surfing aside, my own personal experience of Jeff was that he is a very nice kid, he smiled a lot and a cheeky/cocky larikin side. I liked him, I like happy, cheeky, a bit cocky kids cos I was one myself once, but mainly cos they smile. [I hate grizzly cunts, and I usually clash violently with them, if not physically, certainly in spirit.]

From what I've seen on the interweb, I'd submit that Jeff has become a 1%-er.

I was stoked to see that clip of Rowley, his big wave surfing blows my mind and I wouldn't know him personally from a bar of soap. But it seems his character is rubbing a few of the vicco big wave surfers up the wrong way, not just brutus.

I've done about half a dozen trips to vicco this year and scored a few 6 to
8 ft days. I'm certainly not a big wave surfer but chatting to some of the guys over there who are the same kind of stuff as brutus is saying kept coming out, even from guys who said they were friends with Rowley. Lots of head shaking going on.
And that was from my fishbowl outsider perspective talking to people who hardly knew me?

The rules have never changed "down there. My father was one off the first guys down there to surf those waves, i've caught one or two down there as well.
l grew up around they guys that pioneered that coast and I can tell you the same rules have been preferred "no pictures for publicity" as my old man just said to me on the phone.
Guys that really live that coast catch waves like Rowley's year in year out, no pictures no film. He surfs good. But publishing is beyond disrespectful and shit

Surf there, stay there, spent money there but go slowly and gently.

Gidday, filming and exposure is nothing new down there. It was featured in the old Rip Curl vids, along with other waves in the area, and in Roar/Gash's heyday there were plenty of articles and photos of it and about it, mainly introducing and publicising the guys that surfed it and the boards they were riding and shaping.

These sites along with the line ups are becoming over crowded with idiots.

JR has made his bed. He has disrespected a coastal community to which he is a visitor. Dozens of surfers who frequent the area and have done so respectfully for a very long time but live elsewhere are also off Jeff for his continued self centred actions.

If anyone anywhere thinks they can go to an area as a visitor and run their own show against the grain, they will cause friction and create their own destiny.

Word is other competitors on the BWWT believe JR to be a total tool.

Personally good on him for paddling into those big beasts, but it looks to me when he is up and riding, the big long board bounces around alot, what do short tow boards go like out on that wave, or are they forbidden..?

Gidday Turner, yeh I just got back from surfing in that region on the Pacific side. Its full on, so many little isolated islands with a handfull of people on them got the full brunt. They wont even register in the aftermath. Cloud Nine area would have got pummeled too, would have been radical with all the resorts and stuff there. We got some supplies to some friends and my wifes family, but it will be a while to see how they are, before people can get out there. Her grandpa lives with some cousins alone on one little island, he would have copped the brunt. They are pretty resourcefull, and resiliant though, so hope its ok. Its non profit so not much about it.
