Semi Pro Shakedown: Errata Erratum
By Julio Adler:
The written word is a lie, I should have learned the lesson when I first heard that Public Image song back in the day - I'll talk about the song later.
I owe the Swellnet readers an apology. I was misinformed about Parko being sent in by some furious locals the other day here in Rio. The funny thing is, he wasn't even in Rio when O Globo, one of Brasil's biggest newspapers, reported the fake fact.
I fell into the oldest trap a writer could fall into: I believed the news and didn't double check.
I owe Parko an appology as well. Sorry Champ.
Shit happens, but not gonna happen again. Same ol' story, lesson learned, like Parko's lesson last year, he didn't make the same mistake twice.
"Anger is an energy"
Johnny Rotten has thundered it in a song, Rise, a beautiful song. It was 1986, Curren was at the top, Carroll second. I know there's plenty of nostalgia in those articles, but I can't help it.
Especially when every wave Kolohe caught today reminded me of Jason Buttenshaw, David Eggers, Joe Engel, and Shane Herring: same expectations, same hopes.
I can't help it.
Anger is an energy, such a powerful truth. The tour is made by anger, let's not fool ourselves! Medina is pure anger. Like Adriano, Flores, Logie, even Jordy now - you're gonna eat your words, sir!
Rabbit was sheer anger. Wayne Lynch too, spitting at his board in Evolution. McTavish doing his head deep bottom turn, young Nicky Wood forcefully claiming his winning wave at Bells Beach at 16-years-old.
Anger is as important as love if you want to succeed in competition.
Today was all about the girls in the Billabong Rio Pro, and some girls knows about girls better than most of the men. Steph is the perfect example. Remember last year speech at the ASP ball..?
"Carissa, I'll let you borrow it, take care..." Smiling Steph said as she handed the trophy to the new world champ, Carissa Moore.
And Tyler Wright is just like Occy, minus the tight pink Billabong trousers. One can tell she wants to make a point in this Barbie doll world of surfing. Tyler is the physical opposite of her brother, Owen. She's short and stocky, has a low center of gravity, like Tom Carroll, lots of power. She's pretty but she wants to let her surfing do the talking. Not many girls can do that.
Did you watch the girls today..?
No, neither did i. Big mistake mix boys and girls in the same contest.
The girls are good now, beautiful, articulated, not like Megan Abubo. They love Rio more than the guys because they are having fun in this marvelous city. They learned how to samba last year, took some happy picture with Redeemer, eat like there was no tomorrow and got courted like princesses.
Here in Rio flirting is a national sport and it doesn't really matter if you're bluffing, as long as you score. If you throw Alana in Ipanema, any day, any time, she would not be even perceived as a hottie, too skinny, too blasé. She's not as curvy as the Cariocas like it.
But, hey, it's perfectly okay, Jack's with her, they make the most marketable couple in the biz now. Gotta love the hair and the pics in Instagram. Pure voyeurism.
Now, if the girls want some real quality attention, they must seek their own contests detached from mens tour. They've earned it and deserved it. They should get some Simone de Beauvoir kind of shit over this tour! It's time for rebellion! Anger is an energy!
Julio Adler is a native of Rio de Janeiro. He travelled as a professional surfer during the late-80s and early-90s and got completely involved with the pro surfing hustle, questioning judges and journalists and wondering what the fuck they were all doing. Around this time Julio began writing for surfing magazines and is now a regular columnist for Surf Portugal and Hardcore in Brazil. He's never had an English lesson in his life and can thank surfing magazines and Neil Young songs for his grasp of the Queen's tongue.

How's that Wayne Lynch bottom turn? Nothing was ever the same after those images and that movie!
Its hard to believe that just 2 years earlier walking the board and hanging ten were state of the art. Its also hard to believe surfing will ever have such a sudden leap in progress as 1969.
To Julio, it takes honour to admit you got something wrong especially when no-one here in Australia would've found out about the error. "May the road rise to you."
Hats off for tapping Julio to write your Rio reports. Can't think of anyone better to be posting for you guys. Classy stuff. Looking forward to reading his take as the connest rolls on.

Muito bom Julio! O Lewis Samuel e o Matt Warshaw devem estar em Sao Francisco babando com seus artigos. As palavras estao tao afiadas quanto o seu backside na epoca que venceu o circuito da OSP no Rio. Parabens! Christian
