Episode 9 - Sayonara

I'm in a world of pain right now. Sitting in Waikiki Starbucks, with a margarita migraine, wishing I was back on the North Shore. I just dropped Clare to the airport to catch her ridiculously and painfully early Jetstar flight back to Sydney.

After napping with the homeless crew on the Waikiki foreshore I started thinking about what I'm going to miss the most about Hawaii...

I'll miss Foodland. Good for groceries, the latest goss and a perve. I'll miss its cold floors, hot customers, 18 packs of Carona, intense American packaging design and shelves of orange cheese.

I'll miss the neighbour enforced speed limit and the respect that hangs in the air over here. The pecking order and the courtesy that comes with hierarchy and the surfing community. Don't drop in on me. The law of the jungle.

I'll miss Sharks Cove Grill, Teds Bakery and the weird lady at Pupekea who sells Tie Die t-shirts. Bill the bike guy who spends his days riding his Cockatoos around and chatting to Clare and I when shooting comps.

But most of all I'll miss the waves. The sound of them when you wake up, when you go to sleep, when you're riding one. Surfing in a bikini, surfing at sunset and the calmness that comes with that. The feeling that you get when you surf is in the air over here, and I think that's what I'll miss the most about the North Shore. You breath it, and live it - and so does everyone else. And it wraps you in it's warmth and keeps you coming back. It's magic. Just like rainbows.

Until next year.
