Episode 7 - Shelter From the Rain
Pouring with Rain.
A nasty weather front has set in here on the North Shore. It was bad enough being stuck inside yesterday, but when we woke up this morning and it was still raining, and Pipe was cancelled...the mood was darker than the clouds in the sky.
We came here to shoot, write and surf. The lack of swell and stormy weather (never great to shoot in) has been putting a spanner in the works, but this morning...we said screw it. We donned our wet weather gear and got Clare's 600 mm lens it's new little rain jacket. Jumped in the car and went hunting.
Rocky's gave up the gold. It was going off. The water was brown but the waves were round. Hollow to be precise. Conditions had potential for Pipe. But alas, no sunshine, no comp.
Barrels. Everyone was getting barreled, tunneled, tubed, shacked in the pit. They didn't really have much choice. You had one of two options, pull in or pull out onto the shallow reef.
Every man and his dog was in the green room today. Steph Gilmore in a cute white one piece. Little kids, old men, crazy rasta cats with cool hair. People were pulling on the wetsuits. Boards were broken and fins were lost. But those who decided to brave the rain were rewarded. And so were we.
We're heading out tonight and what we expect to hear is ‘you should have been there today man' and we can say - we were.
