Episode 3 - Small Wave Blazing

We weren't quite sure what was going to run today when we indulged in a few margaritas last night. Clare and I should have known better because with only two days of surf predicted for the rest of the O'Neill World Cup holding period, they had to press play to avoid finishing without a result. After this year Australia knows how a draw feels, and we don't wish that upon anyone.

Today they're pushing through the men's heats, with the rest of the women's heats and the men's finals scheduled for tomorrow. To speed things up they're double-banking the comp - running the odd number heats at Kammies and the evens at Val's Reef.  The crowd's attention is divided but with the main grandstand positioned closer to Val's it's the even heats that are getting more eyeballs and better waves.

Everyone's swapping their larger rides for smaller ones - Aussie Josh Kerr took out his heat on a 5'10" - not what you'd expect to be pulling out of your boardbag to surf Sunset. Nonetheless, after four days of nothing the competitors are raring to go - making the most of the fun waves by busting little airs on the inside section over a foot of water.

Julian Wilson donned the red jersey and followed on from his 3rd at Haleiwa taking out his heat, focusing hard on his seeding for the Billabong Pipeline Masters.

Aussie Adam Robertson had his game face on as he hit the water, and after starting off surfing the point he quickly realised the inside had more potential. Moving over for the second half he scored well, but not quite enough to take him to 2nd place and make it through the next round. Don't worry Robbo - we still love you.

World number two Jordy Smith hits the water this arvo along with Mick Fanning, John John Florence, Taj Burrow and Matt Wilkinson amongst others, to battle it out for the quarter finals to be held tomorrow. We'll catch them then, hopefully in better conditions  - with the swell predicted to increase overnight everyone's looking forward to a bit more of a show. Including us.
